Finally a HUSKER again
Im rebuilding a 67 727, and I have 4 thrust washersin the outputshaft/planetary gear train, and my 71 manual only shows 3. Where did my MAGIC thrust washer come from? I know in the rear anulus there is just a thrust plate no thrust washer. Did they have an extra thrust washer on a 67 between the rear planetary assy and the thrust plate?

Im gonna have too take it appart again to double check myself. I hate having something appart for a few days, then get back into it.

Any ideas??

thanks in advance
Kasey

I count three. Scroll down to see the parts lined up: (5th picture down)

You could place a thrust washer on the back of the rear planetary, but I would think your gear train endplay selective snap ring would not fit into the groove on the front of the output shaft. What is your gear train end play with (4) thrust washers??

There is a small bronze thrust washer on the very end of the output shaft nose as well.

I know of the lil one on the nose, but this had 4 of the same looking washers. larger brass thrust washers.

Im confused man. Im on the phone with Pat from SMR trannys right now.

Pat at SMR was saying someone may have been in the tranny and changed the rear guts with parts from an older 727, and compensated the difference with a thrust washer. He also said if I have clearance on my output shaft, whick I have .008, its a bit tight, but should be fine, the trans will be fine. Im still gonna take it back appart and double check things.

I don't know how you would put another of the large, metal, thrust washers in there, they have tabs on them to avoid rotation and that would get in the way (not flat, can't stack). Did it have the #6 thrust plate as shown in this pic? Or are you referring to a non-metallic thrust washer used between the clutch packs and on the front pump?

No these are the brass thrust washers between the planetaries. this "extra" one was in the back of the rear planetary there is holes that true it up in the housing, and back there there is just a splined thin flat steel shim/washer that rides on the back of the rear planetary, this tranny had a thrust washer there along with the steel shim/washer.

Pat with SMR also said he has ran into that before, and its no an issue as long as the endplay on the tailshaft is in spec.
