My 69 Charger has an odd steering quirk. When the wheels are pointed straight ahead, I have a total of 2 full turns to the left "lock", but to the right, only 1 1/2 turns. You can hear the pump hissing when its turned to full lock in each direction ,and there are no obstructions in the linkage/spindles. Any ideas as to why that would be happening? As Im sure all of you know, a 69 Charger isnt exactly a small car, and making a right turn into a parking spot or my driveway can be a bit of an embarassing chore.

sounds like someone didn't center the steering after some parts swaps and they aligned it off.

I guess you steering wheel got put back on to make it straight as well.

Hissing is normal at lock. Pump is working very hard there.

The total number of turns seems off but I haven't counted in a while. Sounds more like a fast ratio box.

It could be quite a few things, but bottom line, you have to start at having the gear box in the center of it's travel and then make everything right from there.
Things it could be are, column not in the coupler box in the right position, 1/2 turn off, steering wheel not installed in the correct position. (factory wheels have a master spline and will only go on correctly..

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but I took a closer look at the pitman arm. I found a number cast into it that shows to be for a 73+ B-body. Am I correct in assuming the 66-72 pitman arms dont interchange with the 73-79s geometry wise?

I was sold a pitman arm off a later B-body and was told it would work. I couldn't even get the thing to fit...it bolted to the box but that was it. Jack the car up and get under it. Then have somebody work the wheel and look at the travel. If it looks like the arm is causing the bind, swap it out. But be fore-warned, pitman arms aren't cheap!
