Big time leak, I think I may have put both halves with the edge nearest the back of the motor not the front.

Can you loosen the main caps enough to get the seal below the crank out?

Yes you can. Use a wooden dowel to help push the seal around the crank so you don't scar it. Then you can grab the seal with some pliers to remove it the rest of the way. Just rotate it out of there.

And yes you'll need a new seal

Oh and oil the new one up good to help with install.
