What's required to buy a racecar in Canada and bring it back to the US?? Can I do this without a passport? What will it cost me at the border to come back to the US? Thanks alot, Clint

Gotta have a passport these days.
I do not know about the rest , but all the documentation you can bring to the table is a HUGE plus.
Coming into the U.S. is far worse than going the other way.
This just struck me........if they are close enough , have them bring it to BIR and do the deal there.
far simpler.

I'm trying to, but... if he won't then I'll have to go look at it up there.

this is not car related but, I work in a floral distribution center and we had a run of boxes that were label'd wrong (the box said the vases were 5 1/4" and the invoice said they where 6 1/2) due to that customs rejected a full trailer load long story short you better have your ducks in a row or be prepared to be pissed off and empty handed

Clint, you'll definitely need a passport to get back into the U.S. and the customs guys will most likely make you pay duty depending on the claimed value of what you're bringing across. What? the Arrow not doing big enough wheelstands for you. See you in a month at BIR.

I bought a jr dragster from London Ont. 2 years ago for 6K. It was no big deal. showed them my passport told them I was buying a car. they asked if I was carring more than 10k across the border. I believe 10K is the magic number. I was up front with the border agents on everything. I went with an inclosed trailer and they never even looked inside going to canada and back to US.

If you show up at the border either way with 10,000 or more and no paper work for it they own it. You can take all you want but you have to have the paper work for it.

Its pretty easy for a American to buy stuff up here and take it back..... Its much harder for us to buy stuff down there and bring it up here... Just bought a enclosed trailer... Needed all kids of paper work then i had to pay 2 separate taxes (federal and provincial) then when its up here it has to get the two types of inspections (fed and provincial)

I'm pretty sure the Canadian guy wont bring it down because it will cost him something to bring it down across the border cause on the american side they don't like us selling stuff down there cause its like your not buying from another american losing your country money... Even though you are probably saving a bundle buying it up here.

Here is where a good story comes in handy.
He is bringing the car down here to have a chassis shop work on it.
You are the chassis shop.
If anyone asks you ..........yes the car is here.
When he comes back empty trailered , that explains that.
A little mixture of exaggeration and fabrication will probably save you a lot of pain and itching...........not to mention money.

It's nothing to get excited about. I've sold a few cars to American's and it's went off without a hitch. If you really are a worrier you can go through a custom's broker, pay about a $100 fee and have them do some paperwork on it.

I've been calling around and checking and it sounds like I'll be fine. The us border patrol said that when I'm coming back to the U.S. they won't turn me away even without a passport. It'll just take awhile for me to cross the border. The guy won't chance his being able to come down here to race by lying at the border.

I tried to post a pic of the one I have now but I'm not smart enough to get it to post. The one I'm looking at is the red one that was on racing junk. There is also a pic of it in the Arrow thread.
