Don't recommend it...Been there done that...

I ended up having mine worked on so there was about 15 degrees timing at initial and full in by 1100(ish). This was on an MSD billet unit.

Worked like a champ.

I ran the light blue and silvers before with black bushing on my old setup but some swear by the lock out and some say kickback issues can bite ya being locked out!

I run straight locked... it works. BUT , I'd rather have a retard too.

5 years locked at 36degrees. Never a hard start condition. Guess I got lucky.

Why would it say on kick backs... that can occur
when the timing is up... not down... I use advance
in mine

this is whats confusing? says no locked out timing in summits webaite then look below ...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-8970/

These MSD Three Stage retard controls allow you to retard your ignition timing in three different stages. You can activate one retard for a nitrous stage, and another at top-end in high gear for more mph, and still have another module left over for dual-stage nitrous systems. When activated together, the retard amounts are cumulative, so you get the total of the three. For example, if you pull 2 degrees, then 4 degrees on the second stage, and another 2 degrees at top-end, the total retard is 8 degrees (2+4+2=8). In addition to the individual retard stages, the Three Stage retard controls have an optional start retard function that retards the timing 10 or 25 degrees while cranking the engine. This makes starting high-compression engines with locked-out timing, such as crank trigger systems, much easier. These units easily connect to your MSD Ignition and can be triggered from points, electronic ignitions, crank triggers, or magnetic pickup distributors. They're supplied with a 2, 3, and 4 degree module, and must be used with an MSD 6, SCI, 7, 8, or 10 Series ignition.

what it says on summits website if you click on the link is do not use with locked out timing. but reading down below it says useful with locked out so I guess its okay to lock it out with the 8970? car is about a monthish from being done.......

Good reason to lock it out on a street car: can't move, one less thing to worry about.
Most common reason to lock it out on a street car: "all the kewl kids do it".
Reason why kewl kids lock it out on a street car: they don't understand what it does (much the same as why they remove the choke, power valve, thermostat, and vacuum advance).

The 3 retard wires must be grounded for zero retard or just fit a zero pill in the box , i have the retard wires hooked up to the 12 volt side of solinoids , when the noids arn't activated the retard wire/s will be earthed , a soon as the noids are fired off the box will pull retard depending on what pill is in the box , the start retard hooks up to the starter solinoid . this can be 10*/25* depending if link wire is cut , timing has to be advanced 4* when this box is initially hooked up , ran this for a while now with no issues , i use a dial retard instead of the pills , also use two stages out of the three.

State of confusion
Lots of street miles locked out at 12.11 compression and it starts better w/OUT the retard than with it. I have a seperate toggle that starts the car which I use sometimes by cranking the motor over w/the key then hitting the toggle to lite it.Sometimes I start it that way, sometimes not but starts fine eighter way.
