Lost my IP last night and I'm trying to figure out if its something I can replace myself or if its best to take it somewhere; anyone have experience with replacement? Also, recommended sources for the IP would be helpfull. Thanks.

The biggest killer of injection pumps on 98-02 Cummins is a failure in the transfer (lift) pump assys. The IP starves for fuel and eats itself. You need to address this as well IMO. If you have mechanical skills, you can change the pump. There are directions all over the web. Type in VP-44 and you will see.

I would replace the lift pump as well as the injection pump. I also would install a big line kit as it's the perfect time to do it. I always run diesel additive designed to lubricate the IP and LP as insurance.

I would read the instructions carefully when deciding to do the job yourself or not. It's not rocket science, but it can be intimidating. Be very careful if you have a leak on the pressure side of the pump as the pressures can inject diesel into your body (like a water jet cutter) which is bad. That said, I would do it myself and you could also if you are comfortable messing with the fuel systems on your own cars. Priming the system is tough after the change, but patience and following the service manual procedure will get it done. I would not do the job unless I had the FSM handy just in case.

I like the Blue Chip pumps. google it.
Much better than a rebuild Bosch pump.

Make sure you use the new coded key that comes with the new recalibrated pump.

If you're wanting to try the replacement/install of the VP44 pump yourself there are some videos online showing how it's done.

I couldn't remember their name, I have the lift pump they sell and like all the info they have on the website.

Well I went the Blue Chip direction and am very happy I did so, thanks for the recommendation I received the pressure indicator light and new pump yesterday, stared around 6:30 and by 11:00 last night it was running. Chip's instructions were excellent and his products are, in my opinion, the best. The truck runs extremely well and it's apparent after my morning commute mileage is up as well ( I went with Chips modified pump.) Fox, didn't see anything on the coded key you were talking about.

It came with a new key didn't it?
It would be stanped with a number that corsespondes with the pump number.

A friend bought one from Chip and says his mileage is up 2-3!!! mine was a long time ago before he made the X pump for mileage.

No key and no reference to one whatsoever in the instructions.
