loctite quick metal
This stuff works great!! I've used it on our gravel screening plant shaker head bearings that were 10 inches in diameter. Those bearings take a beating!

as mentioned loctite bearing retainer works great, I have used it in high speed machine tool applications and had no problems. but you have to make sure the surfaces are clean and oil free for it to set up and work right Ed

How does "quick metal" work in this sort of repair?
Spread a film of Quick Metal on the parts to be assembled, this goo fills the void between the two surfaces and after the metal parts are assembled it begins to harden. Once hardened it saves the day for ya.
If and when you disasemble, the hardened Quick Metal chips away as if it were glass.

I have a 8 3/4 housing that must have had the axle bearing race spin in it at some point, so the housing end is slightly larger and the bearing race for the axle fits loosely. Is there any way to repair this other then replacing the housing? I can fit a .025 feeler gauge between a brand new bearing race and the housing on one side. The bearing race fits nice and snug on the other side. Thanks.
I'd say that if you were fixing a 9" ford, early pontiac/olds, BOP rear then any liquid metal would work since you can put the race in before the axle and bearing.. but with the 8-3/4 with the race being on the axle you would never know how much of the "liquid metal" would end up in the bearing. I'd get another housing or replace the housing end.

How is the housing end replaced? You can purchase new housing ends, but once you cut the old housing, how do you get the new housing end on at the right length? Seems like it would be too short at that point.
Yep, most aftermarket housing ends are much shorter than the originals and are intended for use when narrowing the housing. For replacement you'd need a factory housing end.
As mentioned earlier, the best way is to find a shop with a long lathe and bore/sleeve the existing end.
Green bearings won't do any better in an enlarged housing end, they need to fit snuggly in the housing end just like the originals.
