Confusion
I have a 8 3/4 housing that must have had the axle bearing race spin in it at some point, so the housing end is slightly larger and the bearing race for the axle fits loosely. Is there any way to repair this other then replacing the housing? I can fit a .025 feeler gauge between a brand new bearing race and the housing on one side. The bearing race fits nice and snug on the other side. Thanks.

I think you have 3 choices

1) Send the housing to Moser or the shop of your choice for a new bearing end

2) Peen the bearing surface on the axle (put multiple marks with a sharp punch and hammer to raise some metal and tighten the fit)

3) Clean well and use bearing locking compound (like locktite) or JB weld to glue it in place. I believe one member was sucessful for several years with JB weld.

With the amount of clearnace you have, I'm not sure peening would work. Of course, #1 is the right way to do it.

loctite quick metal

This stuff works great!! I've used it on our gravel screening plant shaker head bearings that were 10 inches in diameter. Those bearings take a beating!

WIsh I had known of that stuff! I had the same issue.......I ended up using a wrap or two of aluminum tape to take up teh space.....

Knock on wood, so far as good.

All the tape has to do is take up space and tighten the fit...I figured it was worth a try.

How does "quick metal" work in this sort of repair?

as mentioned loctite bearing retainer works great, I have used it in high speed machine tool applications and had no problems. but you have to make sure the surfaces are clean and oil free for it to set up and work right Ed

Just thinking out loud here, but, could a local machine shop fab a spacer ring/bushing to make up for the .025 that can be inserted into the axle housing. Don't know if it would work. If the material is hard enouth it might work. Just a thought.

I think I'd rather research an "oversize" bearing race and go that route. if you're going to machine a spacer, why not have a shop machine a whole new race? ought to be fairly simple on a common lathe.

not sure if you'd have to heat treat it after wards though...

Spread a film of Quick Metal on the parts to be assembled, this goo fills the void between the two surfaces and after the metal parts are assembled it begins to harden. Once hardened it saves the day for ya.

If and when you disasemble, the hardened Quick Metal chips away as if it were glass.

I'd say that if you were fixing a 9" ford, early pontiac/olds, BOP rear then any liquid metal would work since you can put the race in before the axle and bearing.. but with the 8-3/4 with the race being on the axle you would never know how much of the "liquid metal" would end up in the bearing. I'd get another housing or replace the housing end.

How is the housing end replaced? You can purchase new housing ends, but once you cut the old housing, how do you get the new housing end on at the right length? Seems like it would be too short at that point.

What about changing over to the Green style bearings? Wont that help as well?

Yep, most aftermarket housing ends are much shorter than the originals and are intended for use when narrowing the housing. For replacement you'd need a factory housing end.

As mentioned earlier, the best way is to find a shop with a long lathe and bore/sleeve the existing end.

Green bearings won't do any better in an enlarged housing end, they need to fit snuggly in the housing end just like the originals.
