72 barraucda ,383 ,trw steering pump, factory steering box, new tight belt. My power steering works untill I do a burnout. Then It don't work for 3 miles and will come back in .and work fine. The fluid is burnt and brown. The steering box valve was completly crudded up, but thats seemed fine since last fall.I have done the pump seals , but ,does my pump need rebuilt.

Sounds like the valve is getting stuck when you bring up the RPM. Also sounds like a fluid change is in order.

Pressure relief valve is opening & getting stuck... It is the valve located directly behind the fitting on the pump that the pressure hose screws into.. Remove the hose, remove the fitting, the valve is under light/moderate spring tension.. Pull it out & look for debris, burrs, anything that could cause it to stick..

That would be the spool valve like cornet684me had cause him to have an incident today.. The relief valve won't cause that.. Just a complete loss of assist..

I had intermittent loss of assist with the power steering on my 70 Charger. I added a factory police spec P/S fluid cooler from an 87 Diplomat. Before, it would sometimes feel notchy after hard driving or after several turns in hot weather. Now it always feels right.
