Hey gang..
OK, us back-garage mechanics.............

What's the easist way to align/synch the shifter on my '69 Charger 500.. It's a console factory Hurst shifter...... I have your typical hand-tools and such.. Not sure if the alignment tool is a specialty item or if I can make-do with another tool...

Thanks for the input........

PS: reason I'm asking is my shifter sometimes has a little grief getting into any gear if I've driven her, place her in neutral and drive putting her back in gear to start going again..... Like mentioned, sometimes she does it, some times she doesn't.........

if it has an original 69 box the alignment tool is a special tool , i ended up making one a few years ago .

what you need to do is get a couple piece od square stock on either side of the shifter levers and somehow clamp them in place , then adjust the rods .

have you checked to make sure the clutch is disengaging enough ?

John... Nope,, I haven't done that.. I was going to get the Service Manual out, but is there a quick-n-dirty method? I've never had any issues once moving, shifting seems to be as good as new... But, I really haven't done any follow-on maintainence there since I installed the new Centerforce clutch assembly a thousand or two ago...

quick and dirty , not that i can think of without being under the car wit ha shifter installed.

those shifters were before hurst changed the reverse lever so the alignment hole went thru it also and you could just stick a 1/4" steel rod thru them all .

Thats how I adjusted mine. Used a 1/4" drill bit.

so if I'm reading correctly it grinds when going from neutral to any gear after its been driven a while (warm)? If so that's not likely shifter alignment but a clutch or possible pilot bushing problem...

but did you have a shifter that had the hole in the reverse lever also ?

No,,, she never grinds... It's just when, say I'm cruising and come to a stop light.. I stop, place her in neutral and wait... Prior to the green, I want to put her back into 1st.. The shifter handle moves, but she won't go into gear, any gear at that point.. Eventually, as I try this gear or that gear, she goes in and off I go... Now, if I'm at the same situation, leave her in gear, but just push in the clutch pedal, alls fine and off I go......

Ah... that's an odd problem there, sounds like there's a bunch of slop or something .

troy next time that happens try to find the reverse gate , get the shifter to go over to reverse postion but don't actually shift into reverse , that will line up the shifter , if that works then its a shifter adjustment issue .

How sloppy is the shifter? it maybe time to upgrade. It could still be a syncro/tranny trouble, if it will go in as soon as you stop but wont go in after idling in neutral its syncros not adjustment, as John said finding the reverse gate should clarify. The syncro actually works as a brake to allow the shafts and gears to coordinate their speed for a clean shift. In neutral the trans naturally rolls over internally due to the rolling resistence from to the input shaft and custer gear which are constantly spinning with the clutch out. Once "gear roll over" has occurred the shafts and gears must coordinate their speeds to allow the syncro hub to slide over the syncros and the gear teeth (look at a picture of one, main gear teeth and then syncro mesh teeth on a gear). The brass syncro or blocking ring works as a cone style brake to slow the movements or catch one up. If when if was built even fresh the builder didn't scruff or score the meshing cones they will work like glazed brake pads and therefore requiring more force to stop the other surface.

I know it was long but hopefully it makes sense. What do you think John, is gear roll over the possible cause? Secondly, can you drill the hole in the reverse lever or is it not in the 1/2 3/4 either?

Careful, your character's showing!

I just aligned mine, the 1/4" drill bit was to long so I used a 1/4-20 bolt. You can use any length that way.-Gary

This ONLY works if you have a LATER MODEL hurst box , AN ORIGINAL 69 BOX , I'm sure Troy has an original 69 era box in the car , does not have a provision to use an alignment pin that MUST GO THRU ALL 3 LEVERS and into the BACK SIDE OF THE BOX to ACCURATELY ALIGN THE SHIFT GATES

i did that in BOLD because it appears that some people might be MISSING THE POINT
