I am planing on making a intake for my rod truck, its a 383 and i am planing on running 4 1 bbl carbs.
Do you have to have all the intake runners join together in to a plenum area, or can i run the carb in the heads( 1 carb feeds 2 cyl.) and just run some type of hose to connect the carbs/runners?

thanks an y and all comments welcome, ideas?!

Thanks

If you do it that way, all of the carbs have to be syncronized to all open the same amount at the same time. Set-ups done like this, usually only work well at wide open throttle.

If you have a plenum, you can have progressive linkage and open more carbs as you need more airflow.

Been millions of multi carbed motorcycles setup without a common plenum, synchronising them isn't a big deal.

Trying to run a common plenum with progressive linkage is setting yourself up for problems with fuel distribution. IOW, the cylinders furthest from the carb your running off of will be lean, or if you jet up the ones closest will be too rich. If you didn;t try to set them up linearly (front carb opens first, next one back is next, third one back is third, etc) then you might be able to handle the distribution problem, or minimise it anyway.

All the carbs are going to open at the same time, I was just wonder what the best set for the intake would be, carb straight into the runners of the head.

really I was wondering also if the motor will run without all the carb runners being link together some how?

It's called a balance tube. The individual runner, or paired runner, ideas works. Not optimal, but back in the day big CFM carbs didn't exist so you had to run multiple carbs and before the 4bbl it was multiple 2bbl carbs. Offy still makes a bunch of multiple 2bbl intakes for a bunch of motors.

Yes, your engine will run. If you are doing it for looks, go for it. If you might be thinking it's a better setup than a modern 4bbl setup, then forget the idea.

If I were going to make a manifold with 4 1bbl carbs, I think I'd do 2 logs, one for each bank, with 2 carbs per log. Then I'd throw a balance tube in for good luck. I think the 2 logs would look more "old time" and would probably work better and be more drivable. Gene

Look at the old Weiand Drag-Star manifolds. All they consisted of was a log for each bank and a balance tube between them. You can find pics of them online and that should give you an idea of how to build your own.....
