A few weeks back I asked some questions re: 383 upgrades I was making. Here are the results:
I put in a Sure Grip unit and uped the gears from 3.23 to 3.73. I was going to do 3.55 but that changed. I also had put in the Comp XE268 cam, lifters and valve springs. (no head work yet. Don't worry, I know some people on here don't like to talk about 440Source, Eddie, or any heads because somewhere on here it's been covered).

The car pulls like a champ above 2k. Between the 3.73s uping the revs to the power band and the cam being a bit bigger than stock- upshifts and downshifts are noticably stiffer and more serious. It idles at 800rpm or so (with a nice lope), and 600-700 when put in gear. Not sure if that's too low.
I didn't get the speedometer accurate yet, but from my best guess, it's spinning at 2100 at 45mph.

Next year it's the intake and heads. I need to find out if the angled spark plugs on the Eddies interfere with the headers. I hope this helps the 383 owners out there!

thanks, and don`t not talk about heads because of some opinions on here, oh and by the way if you think what youve done so far makes a big difference, try the 440 source heads, everyone will think its still stock and they added about 75 or better horses to my 383 with basiclly the same setup

My son uses CPPA 2" headers on his 400 and he has Eddy heads on it. The plugs and wires fit fine on his and are no problems at all with the angle plugs. I have heard some headers give problems but not the ones he has. Ron

2 inch TTI's with the Eddie heads in a 68 Barracuda with a 400 and NO problems with the plugs. Dave.

Thanks for the info on the heads, guys. I'm loving getting 2nd gear rubber when I manaully shift the Torqueflight at about 3500. It is pulling hard so I can just imagine when I get some Edelbrocks Heads/intake on there how it will be. I'm not sure how the 3.73's have affected my mpg yet, but at this point- I don't care!

Next year: Eddie heads, Perf RPM manifold, 700-750 carb, total rebuild. Would you recommend sending it out to an engine builder or just finding a local one? I'm having trouble finding one local that won't bend me over the hood when I get things done.

Why not build it yourself? Just have a machine shop do their thing and you assemble it.

Because I don't have that much faith/know-how in myself to tear apart an engine and rebuild it.
