I'm sure many like myself have read in the past that the hood scoop on the original 1970 T/A Challenger was designed after the belly scoop of a WWII P-51 Mustang fighter plane.
Obviously the scoops look similar but does anyone know for sure if the Chrysler engineers actually copied their design off the P-51 scoop or is it just a rumor?
Does anyone have any actual credible documentation of this?

I've heard the same thing. It's always been one of my favorite hood scoops...

One of the coolest, best functioning hoods found on ANY musclecar
I have one on my street/strip 73 Challenger and I plan to use it on my 71 R/T Challenger when I get it running.

Have you ever looked at a 69 6 pack scoop? It follows the same laws of aerodynamics. You don't wat the scooping area to be in the "boundry?" layer. The air does not move well on the surface, so you move it up an inch.
Its similar in design to the p51 in the same way a gm car mimics a ford car. You need 4 wheels and a motor etc.

And the AAR scoop, and the 72 Mach1 scoops were called a NASA scoop!

Really, I thought they were NACA ducts?

I've read and heard the same thing for years but don't recall ever seeing anything official on it. Barry Washington may have copies or know of some official documentation regarding the claim. Maybe he will chime in. It's a neat scoop. I've always liked the AAR scoop as well but am under the impression it was not as effective. That's not fact, just the impression I'm under from something I may have read.

apparently some chrysler engineer was facinated with the F-4 Phantom, and he copied the jet intakes and the front end on the 71 Satellite was born.

I think they were originally called NACA scoops but later became referred to as NASA.

From wiki:

The NACA duct or NACA scoop is a common form of low-drag intake design, originally developed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (the precursor to NASA) in 1945. When properly implemented, it allows air to be drawn into an internal duct, often for cooling purposes, with a minimal disturbance to the flow. The design was originally called a "submerged inlet," since it consists of a shallow ramp with curved walls recessed into the exposed surface of a streamlined body, such as an aircraft. It is especially favored in racing car design.

The T/A scoop design is an example of a Bauman boundary layer bleed-off scoop developed by a Chrysler induction expert... who knows if the P-51 or other aircraft scoops inspired him... ???
