How much clearance do you guys like to run on the rear clutch pack? Mine's right at .044 and I'm wondering if it should be tighter.

For the rear clutch (forward gears), I like it very tight. 0.025-0.035". Most of my builds are in the 20's. Too much travel works the belville spring, and way too much can cause it to go overcenter. Changing a standard 0.068" steel for an 0.088" will put you where I like to be. And they do make .070somethings.

The particular year factory manual I have says 0.025"-0.045" for 4 disc in the rear clutch.

Thanks Jim and Vern... I have an .088 retainer in it now. Is there anything thicker? And where can I find a part number?

Mopar used to make a 0.106" ring. Not sure if they still have it. I can look up the P/N if you are interested.

Send me a PM or e-mail to remind me.

John

I saved this info somebody posted years ago. I have one of those fat boys in my garage. I bought it new from the dealer in the fall of 2001 (2466811)

There are 4 different thickness FLAT snap rings
that can be used in the front & rear clutch drums.

0.060" P/N 1942063

0.074" P/N 1942064

0.088" P/N 1942065

0.106" P/N 2466811

For performance, should adjust clearance in the front clutch to 0.010" - 0.012" per
friction disc. So, 4 clutches should have around 0.040" - 0.048".

The rear clutch should be between 0.015" - 0.035
-------------------------------------------------

Here's the transtar numbers .

0.060" P/N 22601 chry # 1942063

0.074" P/N 22601A chry # 1942064

0.088" P/N 22601B chry# 1942065

0.106" P/N 22601C chry# 2466811 superceded to (??) 2766811

0.050" P/N 22601W ( waved???) chry# 3410570

I put 2 wavy rings above the belville spring which cuts down on piston travel. Also use the late scalloped belville, less prone to breakage.
