Does the 727 have differing tail shafts based on either intended application or for different drive shafts....say one piece vs. two piece?

I don't know enough about trucks with 2 piece driveshafts to give an answer on that, but there are different tailshaft housings for standard 727's. A car tailshaft housing will have a boss cast into the bottom to mount a console shift bracket, and the plate to allow access to the snap ring will be on the bottom of the housing. A truck tailshaft housing will not have the console shift bracket boss cast onto it, and the plate to get to the snap ring will be on the side of the housing. I know this didn't answer all of your question, but hopefully it helped with some of it.

Trucks with the 2 piece shaft will use a short tail shaft and housing, Basically all the tail shafts and housings are the same length for cars and 2 wheel drive standard wheel base trucks. Transmission in the Duster (and it bolts right up to the standard mount) is out of a 72 D100. There are some housing differences as mentioned above but they are biscally the same.

Trucks with 2-piece driveshafts generally have a shorter tailhousing with a fixed yoke rather than a slip yoke because the slip yoke is incorporated in the driveshaft. Depends on the wheelbase. Larger trucks often have a shorter tailhousing with a parking brake at the end.

Some early (pre-'76) 4 X 4 727's had a shorter yet tailhousing with a fixed yoke and a short driveshaft to the transfer case.

Right on John - My reference above was to 2 wheel drive standard wheel base trucks.
some 4X4's used the short housing and shaft with the short drive shaft to the divorced transfer case awhile later they used the integrated transfer cases and short tail housing an shaft. some of those using the short tail shaft on long wheel base trucks also used the tail shaft drum emergency/parking brake

I know the MH short 727 I have, the tail housing is diff than the ones in most trucks...I built an xmember and moved it forward 2" on the 440 truck

the tranz mount is 5" from the back of case and the other one is 7" from the case like a long tail shaft 727

IIRC it was a 1 1/4 ton chassis with the large 4"-1 1/4" cap u-joint bolt on yoke...no brake

I am finding more and more little things on it are diff from a truck unit also

the eyeloop for the torque rod bracket is higher up the bell than stock truck 727s

had too cut 2 large lugs/mounts on top of the tailshaft housing off to clear the floor pan in the 88 truck

I put a sb short 727 in a 68 dart and it bolted right in and just cleard the xmember only had to build a drive shaft for it...way less trouble

but NOOO not this one...

the manual valve body took care of my linkage by getting rid of it

thats the only way to not have it hooked up and the tranz last

putting a truck 727 in s a slap stick car. Is this 2 hole thing in the center of the photo the cast for mounting shift linkage you guys are talking about? What exactly do you mean by c-clip plate?

2 hole thing is for the console shift rear bracket and the c-clip plate is on the right of the picture, remove the phillips screws and a c-clip is in there to help remove the tail housing
