Having some issues adjusting the rocker arms on my 360 magnum engine.

I bought a new hydraulic roller billet core camshaft and the chevy style 3/8 adjustable roller rocker arms. After checking the valve train geometry with the stock pushrods I had, they were found to be too long. After finding the correct length, I ordered the push rods and went to install/adjust the rockers.

My problem is that its like the new pushrods are too short. With the exhaust valve just starting to open, I went to adjust the intake rocker arm and the adjusting nut bottomed out on the rocker before any resistance was felt when spinning the pushrods. There is still excessive clearance there.

This didn't happen when I originally used the adj. pushrod a few days back. I tried installing the stock length pushrod and it was still too long.

The engine has been sitting all winter, do I need to prime up the lifters or anything?

Ideas?

I know that Chebys with hydraulic cams need to have the valve adjusted while the engine is running, at least that's how I've seen it done. But their adjuster is in the center, of the arm, not at the ends like ours...

I'd maybe start by turning it w a breaker bar to #1 TDC compression on the timing marks then adj both #1 rocker arms to get ~.030" preload & if good there then turn 90 degrees and continue on.

it takes a very light touch/feel to get it right. spinning the pushrod never worked for me because you can squeeze all of the oil out of the lifters before it feels like there is very much resistance.

I dont think its a question of 'feel' in my particular case. Theres still a considerable amount of slack if I were to move it up and down. I'm going to try to adjust them while both valves are closed on the compression stroke to see if that does the trick

Okay so I got sidetracked with life and finally got around to trying this method. I seem to be getting the same kind of results so I'm going to go back and double check my measurements with the adjustable pushrod.

I do have one question though regarding the hydraulic roller lifters.

This motor has been sitting for awhile and I've seeing some mixed answers as to whether the lifters need to be pumped up or what. Should I have pumped up the lifters beforehand? What is the best way to do this? The heads are installed (obviously) and the lifters cannot come out without removing them so I can't soak them in oil in a can or anything like that.

They should be pumped up before adjusting. Use a drill and a priming rod. It will take a bit of time but you'll see them all pump up. Then adjust your rockers.
