I was wondering when a racer ordered a 1964 Dodge 330 SS w/ Aluminum front end did they come from the factory painted white? Or did they come like the other SS cars I've see (black frontend, the rest in primer)? pics would be very helpfull. thanks in advance for your time.

The only SS cars that came primered were the 68s and they came primered with the gel coat fiberglass front clip.

You COULD order any car back then in primer only but I am not aware of any early 60s cars that were ordered that way.

thanks for your quick response. so other then primer, was it only available in white? or could you get it in ANY color for a 64 Dodge Car. and remember, we're talking about the aluminum front end ones. I know the steel front end ones wasn't color-blind.

There is a lot to consider here. The first 1964 aluminum front end cars were Max Wedge cars, all factory normal assembly line cars. Of those I know of none that were shipped in primer.

The first Hemi cars were actually slated to be Max Wedge cars and switched to Hemi cars. Some of these first cars were sent to the Alexander Brothers shop in Detroit to be converted to alter wheel base cars. As cut up as they probably were it is POSSIBLE that these cars were delivered to the users in partial primer as they were all race teams and would have been painted per the teams desire.

I don't know if this answers your question or not but it is the best I can do.

Maybe you are really asking if the factory painted the aluminum front ends on these cars at the factory? If so the answer is yes.

The aluminum front '64 Plymouth that was recently found buried up to the frame was originally white and didn't look like (from the pics anyway) that it had any sort of primer under the white paint on the aluminum.

Was the old Larry Shangle aluminum front end 64 Dodge MW originally black. I'm pretty sure the red interior was original.

I think aluminum front end 64's MW and Hemi could be ordered in any color.

I think the 65 A990's were only Fawn (light tan) interior. Not sure about the exterior.

I'll have to agree with the rest..the cars were completely painted. I had a '63 aluminum nose Savoy and it was beige. I remember a '64 Hemi Savoy that was painted black.

I am working on a 64 hemi 330, it was original paint and the color on the aluminum parts did not match the color on the steel parts. When striping them the primer colors differed and changed the topcoat color. I know of a 63 light weight dodge (raced as the Snorkasaurs III) that was delivered in primer, built first day of production.

Hey Mike, I was just curious on how the restoration on the 64 Hemi Dodge 330 was going.
If you can post some updated photo's on the progress of the project, that would be great.

Thanks for clearing that up.

What about 63 and 64 aluminum front end MW's?

What exterior colors for 65 Hemi cars?

From those lists it appears you were not limited on exterior color on 64 or 65 hemi cars?? Is that true?

From What I know and have had they came all painted in their ordered colors. Here is a red on red 64 Hemi SS Aluminum car. It came into the Dealer in Ohio painted ready to race. Take off the factory shipping exhaust and off you go.

Larry sold that car? Nice piece, & a nice guy, used to run into him at the CA Mopar shows. I remember he kept a can of the old BX-10 traction compound in the trunk.

I can't remember 100% absulute sure since that was years ago. But I thought it changed hands. When he was down for Spring Fling 2000 with it, he sounded like he was warming to the idea of selling it. Have you seen him recently?

so with Paint code 999 – Dodge – “special order paint” could that be also used for a "paint delete"? ~ for lack of a better term.

How much "paint delete" are you considering?

The Snorkasaurs III has a 999 paint code.
