The way I set up gears is the poor mans way but it works.Too check your pinion depth paint 4 or 5 teeth on the ring gear with some spray paint then rotate the gears a few times the wear pattern shoud be centered on the ring gear teeth. The way I check my back lash is to barly shake the ring gear back and forth and lisen for a slight tick(make sure there is no oil on the teeth as it will dampen the sound). The proper backlash should be around 6 thousandth's.Maybe this will help.I have built many rearend's so I can set the backlash by ear by just lisening.

set the 489 up with solid spacer and shims

loose the crush sleeve

this will let you swap yokes and replace the pinion seal with out replaceing the crush sleeve in the future

if its a cone sg,make sure its in good shape, there is a member that has washers so the cones can be milled some and give a used/worn cone sg more life if its on the down side and worn

the cone sg adds metal shavings to the oil as it wears also...so add a drain plug for quik flush and refills

ez to do and it can go horzontal in the back edge of the housing just below the ball part of the rear cover..it will be out of the way there also

all this makes a nice 489 to play with

IMHO,have it done....good luck!

So, we're talking starting from scatch and all new parts?

OK. I brought mine in to the rear end guru. All he had to do was reshim the pinion and I was good to go. Quiet as can be.
FWIW, he said except for the pinion shim, it was a great job. My confidence is now partially salvaged. YAH! I was lucky.

It ain't rocket science.
I hear you 71R/T, after you do a few you know what it needs to feel like. I still check it with a dial indicator but I can get it real close before I even mount the indicator just by feel.

Glad you didn't have to buy any new parts.

those 9.25s are a pain in the butt with their adjuster nuts inside the tubes that you need the long hex head tool to turn.

A little tip. C body torsion bars have the correct hex end for adjusting backlash on a 9-1/4, and they are long enough too.

First I will say that i have never worked on a 9 1/4 ... or a 9 3/4 for that matter ...

The FSM says that you have to spread the case 015-020 during the R&P install.

I'm glad that worked REAL good for you especially since my advice was that it was trashed and it was time to start over . That would have been quite a waste of $$$.
