I just found a really neat original paint 70 challenger r/t 383 4 speed car. You can tell the car has not been messed with and the paint is all original but a question I have when looking at the vin tag is has V6X code on the tag which is a black stripe that runs down the side of the car but there is no stripe. I cant even see where there ever was one. It also has no holes in the fender for the r/t emblem? Has any one ever come across this? Looks like they forgot to add the stripe to it from the factory
Here's the fender tag codes

I also for got to add the car did a light roll in the early 70' and has not been touched since. It looks to be an easy fix with a new roof, new fender and door. The owner of the car claims it never had a stripe on it as long as he remembers?

N35 is actually N85

Cars that got the side stripes would not have R/T emblems. The stripes are very easy to remove too.

Do you see how these two statements might seem contradictory to others?

I took "hasn't been touched since" to mean since the "easy fix" that was done back then.

With the aid of my handy, dandy, Randy decoder ring, I can see that perhaps the "easy fix" was never applied, and the car still awaits that easy fix.

Thanks.

(Has anyone ever used the term handy, dandy, Randy decoder ring before? If not, I would like to trademark it...)

That's kind of what I was implying that there were no holes drilled for the r/t fender emblem so it would of been side stripe car. The side decals must of gotten removed early in life because there is no color difference in the paint where the stripe would of been.

I just talked to the owner and the car never had stripes from the day he bought it new.

Okay, so there are perhaps three possibilities:

a. The factory neglected to put on the stripes that the build sheet called for.

b. The stripes were removed [for whatever reason] before the owner first laid eyes upon the car.

c. The owner is mistaken about what the car looked like 40 years ago, and the stripes were removed at some later point.

What difference does it make, and what action would you take if you knew for certain? Factory mistakes happen, and generally do not substantially increase the value or interest of a car. Add to that the ease with with the car could have been brought to its current condition besides a factory goof and you are setting yourself up for loads of skepticism in making the "factory mistake" claim, especially after the "easy fix" has been made, and the paint redone.

A four-speed 1970 Challenger R/T is a pretty neat car, standing by itself.
