Very dangerous, hydrogen gas, if you would have tried to unhook the battery charger ends in the trunk with the contained gas..... You avoided a very bad accident...

i did it too.. i smelled somthing terrible and as i got closer realised i had turned the dial on the charger to the hold... it fried the batt...the case was swelled.. really hate it ....cause that sucker was one of the last of the good ones...i couldnt kill it before this... the 2 new ones since ...bite it hard....fwiw. cheapst

I've seen it happen on a Ford Explorer with an Optima. We thought the truck was overheating from the "steam" that was coming from under the hood. Opened the hood and saw the "volcano" you described shooting out of one of the battery vents.
We tested the alternator output right there once it stopped fuming and the voltage was less than 14.
Optima blamed the problem on the alternator and wouldn't replace the battery even though it was still under warranty
