Can I buy a 3/4 ton 4 speed transmission for $400 and bolt it up to my 440/72 charger?

Another guy has an A833 Abody one for $250 would that fit better with my car, I really don't know what to do?

The truck trans will be a NP435, a big bulky thing with a really low first gear that won't work in a car. The A body trans could be made to fit, but you'd have to fab up a plate to move the shifter to the right spot.
You really need a 833 with the B/E style tail shaft, it's longer than the A body tailshaft and has 2 shifter mount pads on it.

Is the a body one a 18 or 23 spline? I would always take the inspection cover off and look for bad gears. If the 18 spline is good, I would pick it up and talk to Jamie Passon about converting it to your application. If It's a 23 spline I think I might just buy a complete unit from Passon, As the post about him and Brewers, HE'S AWESOME TO DO BUSINESS WITH!

I will second talking to Jamie Passon, he is the man when talking 4-speeds. I owe him one anyway...

Neither of those transmissions is ideal for your car. The NP trunk trans is not what you want. The 2wd 1/2 ton trucks and vans came with b-body length overdrive 833's. The a-body 833 uses a shorter tail shaft and positions the shifter wrong for your car. If yo uran the short tail transmission you would also have to get a longer driveshaft where the b/e/od truck 833 will use your stock 727 driveshaft. I think trans mount would need to be customized a bit to run the short tail trans in your car as well. If it's an 18 spline (doubt it but could be) then it would be worth converting over. If it's 23 spline just keep looking.

Okay so consensus is that I need a 833 B-body tranny for my car?!.... But what is the deal with the 18 spline...?

See a friend has a tranny laying in his yard we know it is a mopar 4 speed but we can't figure out what it is? the casting numbers are double stamped non of them match up...any ideas how to figure out where it came from?

If it's at 23 spline, just keep looking?.......

WHY?

Don't give the guy bad info. Nothing wrong with a 23 spline trans. Pleanty strong, cheap, and quiet.

I am curious what the difference is between the 18 spline and the 23 spline? Knowledge is essential.

18 spline is bigger all around, stronger, and I think, straighter cut gears. Downside is that they are a little noisier and much more expensive.

I'd love to have one, and someday I may, but a 23 spline is more than capable to run fast times, hold up to a ton of power and they are way easier to find.

dont confuze the 3 speed OD with the 23 or 18 spline 883 4-speeds

It will work also but has a diff ratio and gear spred

3rd is 1 to 1 and 4th is OD

its an alum case and iron tail shaft IIRC

come in car and trucks

Read my post, I never said there's anything wrong with a 23 spline trans, I say just pass on it because for the cost of converting a short tail 833 for a long tail you could just buy a long tail 833. I agree, 23 spline 833's are plenty strong and good transmissions, just I would not bother with converting one, a short tail 833 is worth more to an a-body guy who will use it how it was intended.

It's not a 3 speed OD, it's just an 833 with a different gear set. It's got different gear ratios, which are in the tech archive. It's usually in an aluminum case with an iron tail, but I have heard of stock iron case OD 833's. If you deal with the aluminum case floating shaft issue and use the od gear for cruising only(no WOT shifts into 4th), it's basically as good as any other 23 spline trans. And technically, 3rd is overdrive and 4th is 1:1, so unless you flip the shift tab on the outside of the trans, 3rd and 4th gears switch spots on your shift pattern. Makes for a strange feeling shift, lol, but flip the shift tab and you get a normal feeling shift pattern.

yes,manual tranny 4-speeds

I dont get it..why would 3rd be over drive and 4th be 1 to 1

thats kinda weird to me,whats the point of 3rd being OD when you go to 4th at 1-1 and loose OD

the whole point of a /6 gas mizer with the 833-OD was to use OD for mpgs...no?

who wants to ride around in 3rd to have OD and a gear left

on an o.d. 833, traditional 3rd gear is actually overdrive and traditional 4th is 1:1. so to make overdrive 4th it flips the 3-4 shift around. So 1-2 is the same as a regular 833 then 3 is actually 1:1 or 4th on a regular 833 and then "4th" is the overdriven what would traditionally be 3rd gear in a regular 833... hope that makes sense...

Because the shift pattern is different. Mopar put the overdrive gear where the 3rd gear was and left the "direct" 1:1 gear in the 4th position because it's a stronger location by design with 3rd gear being weakest in the trans by design, I think. The OD 833 is based on the 74-75 833. The 74-75 833 has ratios 3.09,1.92,1.40,1.00. The OD 833 has ratios 3.09,1.67,0.73,1.00. So they changed gears 2 and 3 and left 1 and 4 the same. So in a F-body or truck/van that came stock with an OD 833, you shift 1-2-4-3. It makes for a weird shift pattern. If you flip the shift lever on the trans case and tweak your shift rods a bit you can change the pattern so you shift it back to the conventional 1-2-3-4 H pattern. So with the OD trans, 3rd and 4th have exchanged positions inside the transmission, you just shift it to get the propper gear sequence. So on the highway the OD .73 gear is where 3rd was on the 'old' 833.

You still shift them like a normal 4 speed. 1-2-3-4(OD). The 3/4 gear lever on a OD trans is upside down so that 3rd and 4th gears are switched on the shifter.

Your life will be much easier if you find a trnas that already matches your car.
