I have no history on my 71 challenger w/383, it runs terrible at low rpm and has very low vacuum and the fumes burn my eyes. It sounds real tough, but only drives nice at high rpm, so ppl have told me it has too big a cam. It was a 2bbl originally and someone made it a 4bbl and badged it magnum. I'd like to put in a stock 383 magnum cam just to see if it drives better. Can anyone help with a cam to buy (Crower perhaps), other parts lifters, etc and point me to an installation guide?

might do a cranking compression test to get a baseline on what you have now. What is your timing and idle vacuum (PV might be open) and what carb.

Are all cylinders firing? See if exhaust manifold gets hot at each port when engine is cool and just fired up. Or header tubes.

Sounds like my Coronet before I yanked the mp 284/484 hydraulic cam and went to a comp xe284h cam. Had the same watering eyes, fearsome lope and dog performance until I went with the new cam.
That 383 is very respectable off idle and into the mid 5000 rpm range now. Really happy I finally made the change. Little stall helps too.

what kind of gearing are you planning on running? how heavy is the car? something like 3.23's and 3600-4000 lbs, I'd go with a comp XE262, lunati voodoo 60302 or crower 267. springs that are on there may be OK to use, otherwise, comp #911 should work with all the above cams. stock rockers and pushrods should be fine, too.
