I've got two questions here. What would you folks expect to see on initial timing for a 360 with a rv type cam (204 deg 427" lift) at idle, and also at what deg. do you normally see pre ignition?

What CR? 10-12 will get you close. If the starter doesn't kick back and it doesn't ping under wot or part throttle no damage is being done and it may respond to more advance. In order set: initial/slot length/springs/vac adv

I'd start with 10 degrees initial, and about 36 total (without vacuum advance connected.)

I've got a 360 in a Dart, and that's exactly where I ended up with 10.4 compression..

Remember that to set total that you have to know where the distributor advance peak is compared to engine RPM. Just going in and setting the advance to a total at say 2500RPMs with a uncalibrated distributor will give you way too much advance because it is not done advancing.

I was curious at what an average engine seems to "like". Mine is set at approx. 10 deg. BTDC and is pinging on premium fuel.

10 is not an excessive amt of initial. I'm assuming you have no quench. Might go w a stiffer spring and keeping the total (w vac adv "if used" disconnected/hose plugged) at 35.

No quench and probably a little more compression than the iron heads and small cam can handle.

I have a 77 360 with 8:1 pistons and magnum heads on the top and I run 15 initial and 35 total on 89 octane with no pinging. It runs awesome!

Having your CR (or DCR) low enough to be able to run a healthy advance curve (on your choice of octane) is far better for power production than having to compromise the adv curve because the CR (DCR) is too high for the octane.
