check out Summit on line. They usually have reasonable prices and you will at least know what you are buying. I think they even have stuff similar to that price range.

pawinc.com they've been in the rebuild business forever. Give them a call they can put together a rebuild kit for you for a decent price, plus name brand parts and you get to choose what you want.

You should be more concerned with the brand and part # of parts your're getting than the price. +/- a few hundred dollars is small potatoes in the grand scheme of a motor rebuild. But you do want to know exactly WHICH pistons, bearings, etc you are getting.

my cylinder walls are really good. I don't think it has to be bored. The engine was not knocking. Can I reuse the pistons and hone the block? Let the builder recondition the rods and balance everything and put it back together with new cam and lifters? Would this be safe and save me money?

I did the backyard hone'n're-ring to mine. I pulled out the pistons/rods, cleaned the ring grooves, honed the cylinders with my drill-hone(deglazer), oiled the cylinders with wd40 and slid the pistons back in. Left the stock bearings, put in a hi-vol oil pump, hardened oil pump drive shaft and 7 quart oil pan/pickup. Then I installed the new cam/lifters and timing chain set. New gaskets everywhere and a fresh coat of paint. IMO if you're not going to have it checked, bored and new aftermarket pistons installed there's no point in having a machine shop look at the rods and no point in rebalancing if you're still running your original pistons.

I wonder will the shop put this engine together without buying new pistons. I don't mind the new main and rod bearings and rings. Just not bore the cylinders so I can reuse pistons. Do you think that would cut down the cost from the machine shop? Or should I go ahead and bore it and put he new pistons in? They were reusing the rods anyways.......just curious

Pistons-silvolite

Rings-hastings

Bearings-king

Timing/oil pump-melling

Gaskets-victor renz

Input on these parts? They are in the rebuild kit

Really depends what you want out of it. If you're dead set on having a machine shop do everything, they won't want to put the old pistons back in most likely. Really you should do aftermarket pistons like kb237's and have the assy balanced. It'll have better compression that stock and you'll have a much better foundation for performance. The machine shop will be able to tell you if it needs to bored out, and if so how far. When you get that info, order your pistons. For the $ the machine shop will charge you just for doing any work on your motor, you might as well be getting a set of aftermarket higher compression pistons with it.
