I am currently building the 383 out of my 68 Roadrunner. Here is what I have so far:

.060 over KB 400 domed pistons. (I want around 10 - 10.5:1 compression) Stealth 80cc heads. Used Torker intake and Holley 830 (4150 carb) Lunati Voodoo cam 276/284 duration & .513/.533 lift. A used set of generic stainless steel shorty headers. Aluminum roller rockers 1.5. TCI Streetfighter 10" 3500 converter. 3.91 gears and stock Sure Grip.

Anyone have any suggestions? Anything terribly wrong with what I have so far? I am on a budget, but I would like to be running mid 12's on pump gas. It is going to be a driver with a couple trips to the track every summer. Horsepower ideas??? Do 12's sound like a realistic goal? I am still going to need a distributor / coil. I was planning on running a good mechanical fuel pump.

That should run pretty good. Make sure you can make it stick. A RPM intake would work better but hey if you have it use it. I'd probably use a 1/2" 4 hole spacer might give you a tad more low end grunt. Mech pump should be fine, take your distrib to a shop and have it curved. I've always had good luck w/ MSD blaster II coils. Set your timing in early (2200-2400rpm) @ 38*. I wouldn't be shocked if you could take it to 40*. Those 383 seems to like the advance. and should run 12's.

the only thing i see is that the carb seems too large for a driver IMO.

other then that your close.

My dad runs a 70 chally 383 4 speed - .491 lift cam and kb 400 pistons with a 750 vac holley. 3.23 gears and goes 13.4 @104 inthe quarter.

you have more cam, gear and should be mid 12's no problem

Thanks! I bought the carb from my brother that had it on a mild 440 and it ran great! Hopefully it will work for my application...if not I will have to sell it and get something smaller.

carb is fine. I ran a 750HP on a mild 340 and it was fine. You can tune then to just about any application.

you are probably going to have to deck those heads a bit to get to 10.5 but other than that you should be in the 12s easy.

Good luck with it!

Yeah I figured it was better than having too small of a carb. This has the 30cc acc. pump so I think it will work. Thanks guys!

I am having the block surfaced. Not zero decked, but I am hoping that will help.

try 74-82 jets 1st and go from there. Your PV will be dependant on how much vacuum you pull.

Thanks! I haven't even looked yet to see what is in it for jets. My brother can't remember.

if those rockers are the cheap ones i would toss them and just use a set of the HD non adj Mopar rockers and shafts then measure up the right length pushrods. otherwise looks good

Why? What is the story with the rockers? I think they are Proform.

The only problems I see are, I would want real headers (hookers) and deeper gears(4.56s)
Carb sounds good to me, I put a 800 dp on mine and picked up over the 750...

Yeah the headers are a concern of mine. I know they are not the best, but I got them free and they are like new. 4.56's are too steep for a 99% street car. Like I said it will maybe see see 2 weekends a year at the track. I want to be able drive it on the highway!

You will want to have the block zero decked so you can run a flat top piston, a .039" thick head gasket with those closed chambered heads. Will give you quench and that'll result in a tiny bit more power and better detonation resistance.

Your combo should have no problem running 12's. I would rather run a performer rpm intake than that torker though.

those 5cc domes, at 0 deck with a .039" head gasket and 84cc heads will be right around 9.98:1. if they're say, .020 in the hole, compression will be 9:5:1. building compression on a 383 is hard without a lot of head milling.

I'd probably stick with a dual plane intake, an eddie RPM or DP4B

KB's website lists the pistons at -6cc. The new Stealth heads are 80cc. I'm not going to zero deck the block (but I am having them take some material off...not sure how much right now) the block is at the machine shop now. I already have the torker that I got super cheap so I am going to try it. Thanks for the info guys! Lots of good stuff!

My pistons wound up .024 in the hole and with the .040 overbore, 84cc head came to 9.52 comp. Like Patrick said 9.981 isn't bad at all. I plugged it in to the comp. calculator as a 80cc head as well.
