Fix the shaft, change the oil, and give it a shot. Short supply of oil may have brought about the noise. Try to be optomistic.
You could always pull the oil pan, and look things over.
Too many cars, too many parts, too little coin, too little space to work in, too little time left to make it all happen!
Update: down to one ride, still too many parts, a little more jingle in the pocket, gaining space, and it's going to happen this year!

If it was me, I'd just put a shaft in, so as not to take any chances. Then either run it and check the filter, or pull the pan and check a few bearings.

how could i have lost all that oil? there is a small oil mark under the car but not 5 quarts.
My guess is you burned it outta the motor during the ride. It was probably spraying in the baffle and sucking it into the carb through the PCV and goin out the exhaust. That what I would say....

The plug in the rocker shaft is the "end of the line" in terms of oil to the top end. But that oil volume is controlled by the cam and the cam bearings. So while it's not good for that side shaft/rockers, it's not fatal. From the sound of it you burnt it. Why or how needs more info. The fact it's got lower end noises tells me it needs to come apart if for no other reason than to check. I'd pull it just in case.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

I agree with you on this when he says that the noise is definitely in the bottom.

He said he drove 14 hrs road trip, some racing, and some short trips around home. 14 hrs @ 70 mph is 980 miles. If you burned 5 quarts in 1000-1200 miles you would see it in your rearview mirror, I think. That's not a solution to the problem, just an observation on oil usage. If you didn't hear it knocking until you warmed it up that day, change the oil first, see what happens, and if OK drive it for awhile and keep an eye on it. Maybe take an oil sample someplace for a 1-shot analysis??? Don't pull the engine unless you have to, 'cuz by Moparts rules you then have to put a stroker crank in... :
Parts I seek:
driver doorpanel, 65 Sport Fury, prefer black, needs to be 7-8 on 10 scale, might buy set
16" x 6" Dodge truck wheel(s), from early 70s?, takes 9" dogdish - need for a research job so cheaper is better.
69-73 C-body caliper brackets and/or splashields
Send a PM.

I'd imagine if all that oil went through the motor you'd have some unburned oily nastyness on the back of the car also.... If it was leaking out somewhere in transit you probably would as well. Good luck hope it all works out ok... Quote:
