My daughter just bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee to replace her totaled 2005 Neon. It has the 4.0 L and 5 speed. 80k miles. She loves it.

Any trouble spots or special maintenance items to consider?

My son traded our old '94 on Cash for Clunkers. It had almost 200,000 miles and still ran great and had its original clutch. If he hadn't beaten the crap out of the body, he'd still be driving it. I think I put two waterpumps, radiator, a couple of batteries, starter, and alternator in it over all those years.

Heater door repair is VERY common--the heat and ac will get crazy--the doors break at the hinge--Mopar has a parts kit to fix for under $300 but labor includes R&R of entire dash, steeing column etc--lots of Mopar techs do this repair on the side--away from the dealership --power window motors will go bad --good news is that there are aftermarket ones now for cheap like $70---power steering hose has an odd connection end and they usually need to be replaced at least once-My wife LOVES her 2001--we have a 4.7 that will fly and always delivers 20 plus MPG- Good Luck!

Grand Cherokee's with dual climate have that problem. Not Cherokees

I own a 98 cherokee 4.0 5speed and love it. Radiators plug easily, A/C evaporators go bad. Water pumps also need replaced once in awhile.

naxja.com is a forum for only jeep cherokees.
Excellent source of info.

ABSOLUTELY must maintain the hood latches (there's one on each side) and the pivot for the hood latch cable. Horrible design. They have a tendency to freeze up, and when they do, it's really, really hard to access them to get the hood open. Keep them lubed.
