Hey guys, For some while now my gas gauge has not worked on my 67 barracuda. I figured I would just replace the fuel sending unit and that would take care of it. I have read on here about gauges having ground problems and thats all they needed to work. I crawled under my car and noticed all I had connected to my fuel sending unit was the actual gasline on top and the elec. wire under it that went through the trunk. No other wire or strap. Is something wrong here? Also if I do replace the fuel sending unit, do I need to drop my tank? I ran my car completely out of gas, so no spill issues. Thanks!

There should be a metal ground strap, about 4" long, that clips onto the nipple sticking out of the sending unit (the one where your hose is connected). The other end of this band/strap connects to the steel fuel line itself (the one running to the front of the car). The ground strap basically skips over the short piece of rubber fuel line that joins your sending unit to the metal fuel line.

If it's missing, and you don't have one, use a piece of heavy guage wire and see if it cures your problem.

Also, check to make sure that all of your ground straps and wires are connected. When I bought the Duster, it only had one ground strap. The fuel gauge worked intermittently. I finally decided to connect 3 ground straps, one from the engine to the frame, one from the frame to the body, and one from the body to the engine. Once those were installed, the fuel gauge worked!

I just use a piece of 12 gauge wire and small hose clap on the sender outlet. Then I ground it to the body with a drill screw.Rocky

Do I have to drop the tank to change the sending unit?

If you have a Dana rear, maybe. Any other rear and you should have lots of room. In my 68 Dart, changing the sending unit wasn't a problem, until i put a Dana under it.
