What would cause your motor to try to keep running after shutting it off other than timing and high idle speed?

Start by turning the idle speed down. You can also turn the ignition off while in gear, rather than in neutral.

Causes for dieseling can be

Idle mixture is off, either too lean or to fat a mixture can be a cause

Carbon build up causing a hot spot

Carb not closing completely

Too high an idle

Incorrect timing

Not necessarily in any order

Your throttle plate isn't closing all the way.

Yup,
Need more intial timing which will allow you close the throttle blades more at idle.

GOOD food-for-thought ... but when I have encountered something like this .. it has been carbon build-up that is glowing.

TRY fogging some water down the carb ... that might loosen up the carbon. Back when I had this issue ... a 400 in a duallie with lots of miles .... WATER INJECTION straighened out the situation directly.

It was almost a MIRACLE how this process would actually CLEAN UP a carboned-up spark plug I threw in there just as a test.

Only way that timing can effect the dieseling problem is that the timing can effect the idle speed and the most common cause of engine run on is too fast an idle speed.
Timing in itself cannot create engine run on (other than effecting idle speed). All electrical power to the ignition is off.

No kidding? would that clean up valves and unstick rings? is it safe? Just use a squirt bottle or what? sorry to hijack but that sounds like good info.
