Friend wants to convert his '67 GTX over to either a Lenco or perhaps Liberty manual trans? Which would be the best setup for this scenario? Obviously the Lenco can handle the power but how about Liberty?

Engine is a 540" Hemi with 10-71 blower and two 1150 Doms I believe. Whatever the biggest thing QFT had at the time was. HP is 12-1400? Long story there. Dana with locker and 4.10 and the chassis is 4 link certed to 8.50 I believe. This is primarily a street driven car.

Gonna change the induction to fuel injection and put a manual trans in. Which trans would work the best in this application?

Thx!

I have a Liberty Extreme 5 speed in my car. It's rated at 3000 hp.
Lenco's have more drag and parasitic loss than an automatic trans.
When was the last time you saw a Lenco in ProStock?
You need to speak to Liberty about a "street" trans. The clutchless unit's are not designed to be street driven.YMMV.

Give Justin Brangers a call. They do a ton of work on all of the top tranny's. Have most in stock, at all different levels needed. They are outside of Louisville. Tell Justin Rick sent you.

Never driven a blown hemi, but I always wanted a manual trans behind my EFI Hemi, and with the power plant you describe, its going to need to be a clutchless trans. My vote would be for the lenco. Its a little more drag and heavier, but still very streatable. A littler noisy too....I have been wanting a Lenco drive (w/converter) for a long time or an st1200 (w/ clutch). For your application a Lenco drive 3-speed would be the ticket with all that torque on tap. Hemis rev so quick, I ave no idea how you would get the clutch in and the thing shifted in time, that's why if I did one, it would be a clutchless no atter what.

From what I understand, the Liberty trans jumps out of gear when you lift, but I don't know if you physically held it in gear if it could be streeted.

The torque that a 1200hp blown hemi produces would shred a DR4 in about a second and a half.

You might be right, but when I was looking for one be it not near that power level...
They told me they were rated to over 1800hp in drag race conditions

Just think of what it will do to his Dana/Locker combo?

What about the G-force units. It seems that most of the time I talk to a SuperStock stick racer, more often than not, they say they have a G-force. I think the fastest stick HEMI cars use a G-force. Ive been told from the SuperStock racers that all the manual trannies will eventually break, so they go with the one thats the easiest to service and maintain and they claim G-force is the way to fly. I have no personal idea however so its not my opinion, just what I have gathered from the track. My wife asked me about changing her car over to a stick, so I started researching alittle and about soiled my shorts when I saw the cost of the tranny alone!! I think we are going to stick with the 904 and keep it boring.

Quoting Jerico:
This transmission's durability is proven by the leading Pro Stock teams, which repeatedly put 1300-plus horsepower through the JericoŽ.

IIRC the Libery will only jump out of gear on let off if you are using the compitition trans. That trans wants the gas. not on the gas it will try and come out of gear. I watch my buddy drive his Camaro on Woodward and in a parade with the compitition Liberty. They do make a street version.

But the $$$ are big either way.

I called Lenco and they recommended a beefed up ST1200 with racing internals. They said to run it with a Ram clutch setup and a lakewood or other approved BH.

We're gonne get with Mike@MR2 and go from there. I know the engine made right at 1000 lbs of tq at 3600 rpm or something like that. Tim's dyno would only do 1000/1000 so he had to back off the timing and other stuff so we really have no idea what it puts out. The engine will be going back up to Tim soon so hopefully this time he can get it on a dyno that'll give us the true output to get the correct trans setup.

So what differential should he be running to handle the hp/tq?

A fully race prepped Dana is a good unit but that means aftermarket race gears and a good spool. Dr Diff will be able to answer that question better than I can. If the car is a show piece that won't get driven hard then what he has will be OK.

I thought that it had pro-gears and whoever he got it from (moser/mark williams/strange) had recommended he run the locker knowing the amount of power he had. ??

For that kind of power if slicks are used and the car hooks I wouldn't put a lot of faith in anything other than a good spool.

I would go G-Force or Liberty But one must remember that combo will require an adjustable clutch to make it live past the first launch and gear change
Call Tim Hyatt for a custom unit,I don't have his number in my new phone but you can find his number and anything you ever wanted to know over here: www.umtrnorth.com
