I've been wondering about turbo cams for a while. Mine makes good power despite being an itty bitty .486" custom grind. I don't have the specs in my head but I have the cam card at home.

I know the turbo Buick guys as well as the Supras were running really strong numbers on stock cams.

i had talked to my brother about the motorcycle cams used on a turbo hayabusa making 600HP from 1400cc's and he said the cams are a lot like the N/A cams.

Still have this cam sitting on the shelf from my old roots setup solid flat tappet.

252 262 @ .050
.560 .580 lift
114 lsa I believe.

Turbo setup has a solid roller I'd have to look at the cam card again for exact specs but its about
274-286 @ .050
.680 .680
116.5 LSA.
Idles like a .509 mopar cam.

Does that extra few degrees of LSA make a big difference on building boost?

The wide LSA is to keep overlap and reversion to a minimum, you want to use the boost to push the piston down, and not let the exhaust back into the chamber or intake charge. When LSA is narrower, overlap is larger. (all other numbers being equal)

11.48 @ 120 with a 1.80 60' 318, stock 1.88 heads, stock 904, Pump Gas, 13 lbs of boost.

9.94 @ 134, 318 on pump gas, 14 lbs w/ Eddies, transbrake 727, 3600 lbs, 3.54 gear and 28's.

Here's my monster cam specs. Think you can hang with this baby? This is rocket science right here!

intake/exhaust
.006 duration 284/280
lift .474/.483
.050 intake open 6 btdc close 50 abdc
.050 exhaust open 48 bbdc close 4 atdc
duration at .050 236/232
lobe lift .3160/.3220
separation 112

You can see there's only 10 degrees of overlap. That's as tight as we could get it without going to a custom blank.
Keep in mind that this cam was ground 10 years ago. Comp wasn't doing a lot of turbo cams since turbos V8s weren't very common.
Much has changed since this thing was built. I'm sure people know far more about turbo cams now than they did then. However, this thing makes decent power. You can't argue with that.

my solid roller, one of the remaining parts from my old N/A 340 and i will keep it in my newbuilt
340 with the old ported edelbrock heads
but new milled down TRW pistons making 8.1:1compresion
and a lysholm twinscrew, hope it will make som power at 15psi on pumpfuel i know im new to building a blown engine and this may be far from perfect but i hope it will work fairly good

After trying ALOT of cams and turbos on the same basic engine, I came up with some very basic self tested rules:
The smaller the turbine, the smaller and wider you want the cam.
Pump gas likes less lsa at higher boost levels.
Race gas likes more lsa (seems backward doesn't it?)
A free flowing turbine/wheel combo will like a cam closer to that of a n/a engine, don't be afraid of a 260+ cam.

ok dumb question time as you can tell im full of them lol. how bad is it to run a n/a cam in a turbo motor?like a comp cams 305-305 525-525 hyd with a 110 centerline? does running the n/a cam hurt the motor

A cam like that would really flatten out engine performance, unless you had HUGE turbine wheel(s) and housing(s). There is to much int/ex overlap to run a normal turbine selection. On the positive side, you wouldn't hurt your engine with a cam like that. You would contaminate the intake charge with alot of exhaust gas. You wouldn't make enough power to hurt anything.

orderes my cam today from bullet cams its a 246-250 at 50 and 525-540 lift with a 114 lsa think it will be a decent cam for a 446 with a 88mm ball bearing unit?

Your overlap is 58 degrees. It makes no sense to give overlap at .050 although I see lots of confusion from even folks that should know better. I don't mean that cam is wrong for your application and overlap done right is a good thing.

You're the first one who's ever brought that up. All I know is that was as close as Comp could grind it without going to a custom blank. I wanted as little as possible.
It's worked for several years so I guess I can't complain too much.

Yours is a roller which does change things but it's still a lot more cam than what I've got.

i dont know how much i gained with the cam change going to a roller because my carbs were holding me back. that also effected my cam choice where i may have gone another way.

I sent all my info to Comp to have them spec a cam for my indy head turbo big block, and this is what they sent me back.

I'm thinking about a cam swap. Currently running a Paxton blower with a 216/220, 114 LSA. I have 2 other cams I could use. One a 219/224, 114 LSA and the other a 205/210, 116 LSA. Also have 4.56 gears and 3800 stall. The truck has always e.t'd better than MPH.

The truck has 3.92's, but with the small selection of 17" drag radials available, the gear ratio works out close to 4.56. 3.0 1st gear, 1.67 2nd and 1:1 3rd. She weighs in at a whopping 5166 lbs. 1.48 60' and I'm in 3rd by the 330 going through the 1/4 mi traps in the top of 3rd at 6200 rpm. I'm happy as heck with her 1-2, 2-3 performance. Run high 6.80's @ 98 in the 1/8th but she just doesn't pull as hard as she should in 3rd running 11 flat with mid teens in the 1/4. I use w/m and at times have given the engine a small 30 shot of n2o to make sure the ait's stayed in check. I was just wondering if changing out to a cam with a wider power band would help in 3rd?

There is a defined range for rpm/ duration. You are operating above and beyond that range. Supercharging or turbocharging helps to stretch that range. It lets you "get away" with things that you can't with a N/A motor. In your case, you're "getting away" with alot. 5000+ lbs and almost in the tens,,,, you're doing good. Treat your engine to a little breathing. Go with at least 230 @050. You will be pleasantly suprised.

w/m is turned on at 4psi just prior to seeing any knock and progressively ramps with boost. At 18 psi the little Paxton huffer is working o.t and I've planned on updating to a Procharger F1, but funds are tight at the moment and all my spare change is going towards the Drag Pak Challenger. The engine makes its best power with 10.8 a/f power rich and 11.2 power lean @ wot. Running a factory pcm with this Gen III Hemi puts stock timing at 18 degree's at wot, however I can pull up to 9 additional degree's where needed to stay ahead of the knock sensors before the factory pcm has the chance to pull timing and fuel. Fueling is handled by twin Walbro pumps feeding custom 66 lb injectors through an adjustable boost referenced regulator.

I'd love to run a 230 cam, however I'm still using the factory pcm and I wouldn't be able to get the engine to idle unless I two foot the brake and gas. Your correct about a 230. I engine dyno'd a few of these new Hemi's with 230-232 duration cams with excellent results. One motor made 700hp/735tq at 5000 rpm, non interfcooled, with 9 lbs of boost before belt slip ended the session.

An "awesome" Crane powermax grind because that's what was in the engine when it was in the 66 Newport with 2.76 rear gears. .427" IN. .454" EX. 260-272 dur. 204-216@ .050 112 deg lobe sep. It will idle in gear at 550 r.p.m. 18"hg. in an 8.0:1 383 and pulls to 5400 r.p.m. with a single plane M1 at 8lbs. It'll have to do until something better falls from the sky.
