my friend who wons a body shop and restores Mopars-believes PPG to be the best match. I have seen many cars that were painted by him using PPG FC-7 plum crazy/in violet, that matched the original color great/including my own 70 Challenger.

FC7 was among the colors I had been strongly considering for my project. From my research, PPG as mentioned above had the look I was going for and and seemed to be the best match. KEEP IN MIND, if the person mixing it doesn't do things just right then you're not going to get what you want anyway.

PPG is the best, and as already mentioned, the color primer, how it is applied, etc. can all create various shades of the color.
If I was trying to be dead on for the color I would use ruddy red primer like the factory and shoot single stage. However that would really be difficult with the mettallic so with using bc/cc I would apply 4 coats of base and three clear.

We used PPG Deltron Base Coat (DBC) on the '71 'Cuda in the link. DBC will give a much better color match than you will get with PPG Global Base Coat.

Factory primer was grey with FC7. I remember because there was a problem with the FC7 peeling when new and there was greay underneath the carnage.

The Dupont shades of Plum Crazy seem to run a little light, the PPG is more accurate.

The red oxide was the factory primer-surfacer applied directly over treated bare metal. This primer was machine wet sanded. Following that, directly under the topcoat color, was a light gray primer-sealer.

Your earlier comment about using "ruddy red" primer to affect the final color is inaccurate.

I bought a 70 Charger R/T FC7 car from the original owner, and he said when the car was about a year and a half old,the paint started peeling off in sheets,he said he had to use the windshield wipers to clear the glass of the peeling paint while he was driving. Chrysler repainted the whole car the color of his choice, except Plum Crazy. Original Plum Crazy cars seem to have red oxide primer first, then grey primer, then Plum Crazy.

You are correct Resto Rick. I realize it was inaccurate that is why I said it looks like there was red AND grey primer. I am stupid but not so stupid as to want to refute a picture of an original car. That is the only proof we have. It was clearly shown to have red primer and grey primer.I stated the corrected observation as evident in the quoted post. Again I stand corrected.

PPG is the best and the base coat is effected by the color of primer/sealer used and you need to use at least four coats of base to get a true color.

Just completed my FC7 project with Dupont and it turned out a nice match to the original. It was imperative to use the right value shade sealer before the base coat. I then used 3 coats of base and 3 coats of clear. I do not really have preferance to paint manufacture as I would like to think that they all make a good product. If the guy mixing it is doing his job and it is applied as per the manufacture the job should look great. If I wasn't such a computor nerd I would post a picture, but the kids are not here so I do not have the technology!!!
