Interested in finding out if anyone else out there has found any variences regarding tie rod sleeve finishes? I have seen some NOS that are bare metal and other NOS that are gray phosphate. What is considered assembly line correct finishes for the sleeves, clamps, bolts and nuts?

Thanks in advance.

I had some assembly line complete assemblies and they were a very dark black (phosphate). They came from a factory and Tony D. or Ron Adair provided them to a customer of mine. I too have some NOS tie rod clamps in a Mopar bag dated 1971 or 1972 and they are natural. I have to believe phosphated was the norm.

Thanks, but not even close.

I agree, there are variations here is a b&w on a new car at the factory, you can see the different finishes on the sleeves v. the clamps. With the parts being different steels, the attaching clamps when natural would have some bluing to it.

And a dark finish, it actually looks like zinc.

Hi guys,

On the last 70 Challenger I restored, my research of the known to be original tie rod sleeves revealed:

Sleeves: grey phosphate
Clamps: natural
Bolts: grey phosphate
Nuts: zinc w/ red thredlock insert

Check out the pic on the nut I've attached.

Anyone else find the same?? I'd be curious to know.

Let me change that, according to my notes the nuts were more of a natural finish as opposed to bright silver zinc.

I agree with Mike. That's what they are on my 69Roadrunner
