What was the last year of the 440 Cop Cars? I took a 69 Satellite in trade that has a 440 in it.The owner said that it came in a mid 70s Cop Car.The ID pad has 440 E HP but the block has a cast date in 1977. Did E designate 440 in 77?

1978 was the last year for the 440,On the ID pad, the 440 E-HP means year 1969,but you said it had a cast date '77.some one might have restamped the ID pad.

Depends on if the E is a prefix letter or a suffix letter. Pretty sure a suffix E (on the right end) means a cast crank eng. Once I had a 4dr fury '73 iirc(cant remember if it was a I II or III) w an orange 440 that was an ex Nebraska highway patrol car (had 6 pack rods)EDIT dont remember if it was an E suffix or not

mid-'70s 440 Cast Crank HP

There is probably another digit in front of the 440.

Yes 78 was the last year for cop 440's. The motor you have is a (E) cast crank 440 (HP) cop car motor. In my opinion that's the best on you can find because it's the high nickel metal content motor with moly rings which means that there will be little to no bore wear. The one I have needed no reboring. Mine still had the original factory cross hatching so all I did was have it tanked/rehoned and rebuilt.

I appreciate all of the info. I looked more closely at the pad: T440 E HP.
