I have been having hot starting issues like after my car has been run for a while then stopping to get gas.

I was thinking my starting probelms were stemming from vapor lock but now I am wondering if the heat is also affecting the starter because the last time it happened I was able to get a jump from the vehicle behind me and my car fired right up.

how much does the heat affect the starter?
I got some starter heat wrap to try out & maybe it will help

anybody else have thoughts into this problem?

thanks

I have had more problems with a ground cable doing wierd things. Heat causes more resistance. Easy enough to try a couple of ground straps. Easy jump starts lead me to think this.

Some suggestions.I'd clean EVERY cable end/connection starting at the batt positive post to the starter relay to the starter, starter to block, block to neg cable, neg cable cleaned at neg post. The complete large cable circuit. borrow a known good battery & try it, sub in another starter, check your charging voltage and might add an ign cutoff & start cranking the starter then switch on the ign which solved this problem on our stock car. Starters are strange (electrical) beasts in that they draw more current the slower they turn which drains the battery further which makes the starter turn even slower and this happens (in effect) smoothly in a matter of seconds. When the eng is hot pull the plugs and check the turning torque on the 1&1/4" crank bolt.EDIT meant to say cranking voltage

I have a issue not related to heat. On my 72 340 cuda, The starter will act as if the battery is dead. You can always jump the stater relay and it will fire right up. I have changed the relay. and even did a Mc giver trick of adding 2 more 30 amp relays in parralle so that all 3 relays add power to the starter. It still does the same thing, open the hood and jump the relay with a screwdriver and it fires right off???

I had a duster with trunk mounted batt, that did the hard crank thing when hot. Used to pump gas pedal a bit to flood the thing so it would crank. Ended up using the stock newer nippo starter and never looked back.

I think I may have fixed it!
I got a braided ground strap and bolted that to the engine mount and frame
then I ran the car until it got up to temp and my electric fans kicked in.
shut it off and cleaned up my tools (same amount of time it would take to get some gas) and started it again.
fired right up!
maybe all I needed was another ground?
I'll test it on the road and see what happens

thanks guys
