To install green bearings on my axels does one have to remove the thrust buttoms in the dif .My case is a 849 open with 323 gears.

when I did mine,I asked Moser about it

they said the 489 with the block in would be ok to run it...

I ran it 8 yrs or so and never a problem out of it,daily driving aleast 90 miles a day

I swaped to a 742 open and took a cold chiesle to the block and broke it in 3 piece and removed it

ran about a yr or so,then had a green bearing go out and start leaking oil

replaced the greens and run it with out the axle tube seals this go round as well...

o-ring on the bearing seals the tube up

so.IMHO..either way will work and end seals are not needed either

but the axle seals are a double protection on the ends against leaking

you have to remove the carrier and ring gear to remove the cross pin IIRC

some do ...some dont...up to you

I also give this idea I have on the bearing failure...

they dont take side loading well from what I have read and been told...

mine was pushing 8-9 yrs at 90 miles a day

I hauled a tow dolly about 200 miles,it had a fishtail motion when empty

wagged my truck the 200 miles back and forth all the way till loaded then towed it like on glass..real smooth and no fishtailing

I think the back and forth did the bearing in, cause of the side loading back and forth

it was bad enuff empty to slow me down from 60 to 45 mph

couple days later it was leaking

I have done lots of hard cornering, dough nuts, power slides, and just plane hammering on it

I think the 200 miles of steady back and forth side loaded them enuff to wear the 8-9 yr old bearing out...

just my experiance with them

my new set is working fine and no leaks with just the o-ring on the bearing...no axle tube seals in this go round

If you are running stock length axles with snap-ring style Green bearings, the thrust button does not need to be removed.

..heh Don.
..some say the green bearings don't handle axial or lateral loads as well as oem, personally i have no experience with them.
why not just use oem,or do green bearings have some advantage?

if you use the conventional green bearings you will have to remove the thrust button?

I don't know if you must remove the thrust button with the first generation, RP-400 Green bearings.

I don't see any reason to run the RP-400 bearing still sold by Mopar Performance.

Hi Al if you run the green bearings there is no worry about the axel end play.OEM bearings there is an adjustment for the axel.

What does this snap ring look like.also what does it do.I thought all I would have to do is slide the axel in place and tighten the 5 bolts and be done with it.

the snap ring is on the outside of the green bearing along with a o-ring

the flage goes on the axle then the bearing then the lock coller

the bearing slides into the ends of the housing, the o-ring seal in the end cub and goes in till the snap ring is against the flange

now the bear retaining flange bolts to the 5 studs and pinches the snap rear to hold the bearing in place

no endplay adjustment needed

kinda simple once you see the bearing and retaining flange

the roller ball bearings do not like the extrem side loading

It’s so funny; many of these types of things never come with instructions. Yet after the first time you do it you wonder why they would?

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Good picture, except the inner (orange) seal is facing backwards.
