I am putting together a rb motor ,4.250 crank,7.100 rods,0 deck, eddy heads (with light bowl work, gasket match and race valve job),10.5 to 1 comp. and I was thinking of running the comp.xe295hl cam but I was thinking about a hyd roller as well.I am looking for a nasty idle but still be streetable,(mostly a street car)And low maintance(basicly the most power I can get for a street driven car).I live in a rural area so I have to drive the highway to get anywhere, but anyway here is the cam specs. I was thinking of
Roller comp.xr292hr
dur. .050 242 248
lift .549 .544
110 lobe
valve timing at .006 lift
int. open 15 close 47
ex. open 58 close 10
xe295hl hyd
dur. .050 251 257
lift 564 564
110 lobe
valve timing at .006 lift
int. open 42 close 74
ex. open 88 close 40
I dont get the valve timing thing, but which one do you guys think would be better for a nasty idle and best power and live a long time on the street or is there a better choice than either one of these?Basicly I was wondering if the hyd. roller would make more hp. and tq.than a flat tappet hyd. cam and last on the street. Thanks guys

P.S.The car is a 69 superbee,auto trans ,thinking of a tight 3,500 stall convertor,3.55 gears or maybe 3.90s with a gearvendor,tti 1.7/8 headers eddy rpm intake.Thanks again

This post might get more attention in Unlawfl's Race section.

While I am not arguing that a hyd. roller is better,
I think that there are added expenses, like machining for the link bars, and oiling system mods needed to run hyd. rollers on an RB.

Can anyone else enlighten us about Hydraulic roller cams in RB motors?

I always seem to be reading that the body of some hyd. roller lifter brands get exposed during the cam cycle causing oil pressure loss.

This reminds me I need to read the cam section of AndyF's book....BRB.

The hyd. roller lifters will fit in an RB block with no problem. They are expensive, the cam costs a little more, you will need better springs, bronze dist. gear, bronze fuel pump pushrod, cam button and shorter pushrods. I just installed the XR292 in my 4.25 stroke RB and it is a good sounding/performing cam, worth the expense to me. The cam is still relatively mild and you may be able to get away with 3.55s, I'll be using 3.91s though.

I just finished up a magazine article for Popular Hot Rodding that used the HR292 cam in my 505 motor. I used the Comp lifters as well as 1.60 rocker arms and Comp beehive springs. Motor ran great and made more than 600 hp with the CH-28 dual quad intake.

The HR292 is a nice cam in a 500 inch motor. It has a healthy idle but it should be fine for street driving. With the CH-28 it pulled hard to 6000 rpm and then it was all done.

Cam button, bronze gear, roller lifters, good springs, etc. add money to the build. It probably costs an extra $500 to build a hyd roller motor over a flat tappet cam motor.

I have a bit of an advantage because I get a chance to test parts. In this case I was testing out the new cam button designed to work with the billet timing chain covers. Everything worked great during the dyno tests and looked great after a bunch of dyno pulls.

The 1.60 rocker arms from RAS added a little extra pop to the XR292HR cam. With these rocker arms the lift was up around .580. The Comp 26120 beehives are good to .590 lift so we're right at the limit.

Thanks for the info.but will the roller last on the street and will it run harder than the non roller?because the 295 has more dur. and more lift but the valve timing is totally different.
