I have an opportunity to pick up some low mileage big block headers for an E body. I have a fresh, near stock cam, 4 speed, aftermarket carb, standard compression 440. I probably would have thought the 1 3/4 inch would be right, but these are 2" diameter. Thoughts on suitability?

Why not. I run the TTI 1 3/4 on my 340.

1&3/4 or 1&7/8 would be a better match but if the price/fit (did I say fit) is right I'd be OK with em especially since most collectors/collector reducers and ex systems rearward are too small (restricted) anyhow. And I'd highly suggest an X pipe system

A 2" header is too big for the combination; 1.75" would be a much better fit for what you described.

Seems like everybody's talking headers. Go to tti's website, they have all kinds of footnotes on what a 2" header will need/work with. They also say that 2" is for 500hp to 750hp. If your motor isn't that big you'll be losing hp rather than gaining not to mention the 1 7/8 or 1 3/4 header will probably fit better too.

Thanks for the replies. I think they were fired, but not run on the street, and he's discounting them over $300 from new. Sounds like it may be worth the risk, or at least keep them for a hotter engine I have in the works.

you should be good to go with a standard trans a+.
you didn't mention the gear ratio of the rear end?
you could also grow into them!

FWIW, on different street/strip 440s I've built, I've gone...
- 12.2s w/ 1-3/4" headers...
- 11.0s w/ 1-7/8"...
- 10.5s w/ 2"

Going too big on header size will cost you torque w/o necessarily any offsetting improvements in peak HP, either.

2" is waaay to big for an engine with stock compression and a mellow cam. If they are a good deal you can buy them and trade with someone who wants to move up.
