I am looking at fabricating a rotisserie to stick my car onto to do the underside etc.

Just curious as to what peoples experience is with these, anything to be aware of when setting up a body on it etc?

Thanks
AL....

Hi Al,

My brother and I built a rotisserie many years ago, I still have my car on in right now. The main thing I would recommend is to get the balance right for where you bolt the car onto it. This way it is easier to spin. We didnt get the balance right so have to use a come-along to rotate it. We did it this way so we could bolt the car on it without having to lift in the air to get it to mount. Also, dont make the center beam "to adjustable" as it will want to bow. We did that as well, had 1 center beam and it bowed. We changed it to to larger beams and it doesnt bow now. You can see it in my avatar pic.

Hope that helps,
Mark

You will love it once it is set up.
Reccommend cross bracing if doing any serious panel or roof replacement. Sure is nice to do body work in a comfortable position.

What was I thinking....

I built one for my project as well. I found and modified the free plans off the internet.

Mine looks so much like Jim's above in so much that I even had a b-body on it. Every time this comes up there are about 10 sets of plans posted that are largely variations of the same basic plan. do a search and look at all the plans and decide which features you need. Its relatively cheap and easy to build your own. As a bonus you will find all kinds of people who will tell you you need to buy one, they are full of ...beans (after they have been eaten and discharged)

When the body is rotated 90 degrees, what kind of distance should I have between the side of the body and the base of the frame?
Thanks for the replies thus far!

I went for as little as possible so that I could reach and the center of gravity was not so high as to reduce stability

I agree as well, as little as possible. I had to reverse a set of mini-tubs on my car and the rottiserie made it soooo much easier. My welding is decent enough but overhead welding is not my best. Rotating the body just to do some basic bodywork and sanding is also much easier standing up. My knees don't work the way they used to...

Why do you have the casters covered with rags???

I took those pictures before I started to sand blast the bottom of the car. I used scaffolding casters because they had a larger wheel diameter to make rolling it around easier. The towels were wrapped around them to try and keep the sand out.

Here's mine. Just get the rotation balance so you can rotate it by yourself and use a caster that can role on to a trailer if needed.

I built mine out of mostly scrap metal and some wooden 6x6's. The total cost was under $100. It wasn't pretty, but it did the job.

it like putting the drivetrain in from the bottom versus years of 'in from the top'.

Once you've done one on a rotisserie, you'll never go back to doing the same work laying on your back.

I bought used whirley-jig abut 3 years ago for $800 and never looked back
