I constantly struggle to keep my engine cool. I have tried everything, but cannot seem to find the right combo. What should I try next? I am so frustrated that the money is not an object.

Currently, I have a 19x31 aluminum radiator, dual 12" Permacool fans, Meizer 35 GPM water pump, and a 160 thermo. The car idles at 180-185, drives at 180, and then will heat to 200-220 sitting at stop light or in traffic.

The motor is a "520 RB with Eddy heads and 10.5:1 comp. I am even running the low friction 1/16 3/16 rings. It is a big motor, but not radical.

Do you think the block could be stopped up?

put a stock H20 pump and fan/shroud on and see if that helps.

The fact that it only heats up when cars not moving tells me it's lack of air flow.....Those electric fans just aren't cuttin it.

Take care,

the fans might not be big enough. on my big block, I had a 10" fan and a 14" fan on my radiator, together, they did not move enough air to keep me cool. I went with an OEM 19" fan that moves so much air, the plastic blades actually suck in towards the core about 1/4" and it pulls 30 amps or more at start up. maybe 10-15 once it's running

that fan with a shroud, is enough to keep me cool now.

I had a similar problem with my 470 not too long ago. The fan I had was not doing the job. I ended up swapping out the "flexi-lite" or whatever it was called for a bb mopar clutch-type fan set up. That thing draws a TON of cool air thru the radiator when sitting in park or traffic it's rediculous.

Make sure the shroud is properly matched to the fan size, too.

Possible the radiator cap may not be holding pressure??

First I'd take the 160 stat out...it never closes so the water in the rad doesn't have a chance to cool...A 180 should get the job done. Then I'd move on to those two small fans if the stat doesn't help big time...
Electric water pumps and electric fans are great for the track but with big engines in real traffic leave much to be desired

PM Eric on the board here, and order a HHR electric fan. Those babys flow bigtime air. I didn't have the room in my dart for it, but goody uses one on his cuda and has good luck cruisin around in 90+ degrees.

Might try going to a 180 stat also, but I think you're not getting the airflow you need as mentioned above.

Agree with all the posts. The MP high volume water pump and engine driven 5 blade thermal clutch fan with shroud does it for me. I have a 7 blade fan from a '78 Cordoba cleaned and painted for backup but haven't needed it.

Also might want to check timing advance at idle - strokers with a decent cam like lots of advance. A more efficient idle means less heat. Mine likes 18 degrees.
