I failed to put on my oil slinger on my hot little 360. Using a double Roller chain with the tensioner set up. Should I take it all back apart and add one?

Don't sweat it. Many of the double rollers don't fit with them anyway.

The only known cure is Plasti gauge. You have to eat it, while watch reruns of Cam n' Dean.

No, the quality of modern day seals is far above and beyond what was available when the slingers were introduced 4 decades ago. On a SB though you do want to install the dampener on part way to center the timing cover/seal before you snug it down so the seal opening is centered on the crank snout.

I intentionally forgot mine on my big block. 3 years and 4,000 miles later, no problems.

Excellent advise, I did not do that with the dampner, I'll see if I can measure distances at each 90 degree and see how close it is for now. Will do that for sure next engine. Thanks

I would take-it-apart and put it on. Some here are saying that the rubber seal can handle the oil ...maybe so. But the OIL SLINGER's main-duty is to "sling" the oil UP onto the cam gear and chain.

Just when we had him destressed . lets do this, take the dampener/cover back off including the timing chain/gears/cam plate and take out either of the mini freeze plugs in the oil gallery and drill a .015" hole in a new one, drive it in then drill a larger hole in the plate where the round roughed area goes against the freeze plug so the chain now gets a pressurized stream of oil rather than the inadequate oe splash system which is why SB's have tchain longevity issues. Then w the oil slinger installed you will have the best chain oiling you can provide and be protecting the seal w the slinger and you will sleep better at night knowing you got it dead on perfect & you DO want to go back in there!

If that be the case the cup would face toward the gear and chain not away from it to shield the front seal. There is a great plenty of splash and from other sources to adaquately lubricate the chain and sprockets. As it is it is cupped away form the chain and sprocket and toward the front seal to shiield excessive oil spray. Frt seal <] >chain and sprockets - with a smooth surface toward the chain and sprocket and no provision to provide additional splash, just a smooth surface.
Notice how it is dished toward the fron cover and shielding the seal.

Ahh nuts, you just had to do that. I did do the long drill up thru the mains, I cut the groove in the cam, I rounded all the sharp corners now you got my brain all scattered. Thats a darn good one. Thanks

Dont' sweat it.

If it leaks, put it in then.

Dismantled motors without them, and no signs of weird wear or any hocus pocus like that

My 440's never had one in the 7 years I've had it and been daily driving it spring-fall. No problems.

Not likely to be a problem for ya.

put it on the shelf for next go round

and to add to what RapidRoberts suggested...get a stock oil cooler and install it..

it has a hollow fuel pump bolt that sprays the t-chain with full oil psi dumping back to the pan

along with the drilled hole in the galley plug and a slinger it would be max oiling to t-chain

that would make me sleep better at night knowing I have max oiling to t-chain

just remeber to install it the correct way also

Like I said above the main purpose it to deflect oil from the seal not to oil the chain. The dish of the slinger is all wrong to deflect oil to the chain. It is cupped with the 'lips' over to protect the seal and the smooth rounded side toward inner engine side. See Picture. That chain sees plenty of lubrication without worrying about the little bit that that slinger may or may not put on it.

Isn't anyone using thrust plate retaining bolt
with the hole in the center. That lubes the chain.
