I just took the heads off my 318. The rocker arms didn't look right. A couple of pairs had practically no clearance between each other. I found several posts and even diagrams on big blocks and was wondering if small blocks have the same R-L pairing as the big blocks? This motor is an Autozone reman (in the car when I bought it) and I am wondering if the rockers were assembled incorrectly. The engine does run fine and doesn't make any valve train noise.

Yeah, they should be oriented L-R in pairs over each cylinder.

get the timing marks @ TDC & either the #1 or the #6 pair of rockers arms will be free. which plug wire the rotor is then pointing to will tell you which one. Hand turn the eng w a 1&1/4" socker/breaker bar 1/4 turn on the dampener or until the rotor moves to the next dist cap terminal (45 degrees) and the next cylinders' pair of rocker arms in the firing order will be free depending on if you started w #1 or #6. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

reggie, I have a pic in a Taylor/Hofer HP books manual showing the round dimples on stock production hyd rocker arms offset closer to each other but you have an actual photo of them offset to the outside. I'm confused

Put the right offset in your right hand and the left in your left hand and start at the rear on the left (driver side with a right rocker and then left and so on around the engine. the front rocker on the left side should be a left offset. Front on pass. (right side) right offset and the rear most rocker left offset.

Alright. Here's the pic I was speaking of & it appears in the mag to be an actual photo. EDIT I found another pic in the book of the same rockers and they ARE offset to the outside. I'm confused on how they accomplished that but now I know how they are supposed to go. Thanks Moparforlife.

Yeah, I have that book too. It looks like someone mocked up the assembly in the photo up wrong.

I like it & kept it for a reference as it has alot of good basic stuff and I was amazed not only that the photo looks like an actual part but to find the other "actual" photo that's correct

If you look the offset is also in the angle of the rocker to the valve tip. Take 2 rockers and compare the angles, It isn't just the push rod cup. A lot of the rockers are also stamped with a L or R.

remember that you have to have the notches on the end of the rocker shaft down and forward on the left head and down and to the rear on the right side or you will not have oil to the top of the head.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

When you say "on the left head" you mean Driver's side, correct?

Correct and an easy way to remember is "RR" for Road Runner so notch down at RR (right rear) which dictates the diagonal catecorner point LF as in drivers front is also notch down

Yep. The ones in the pic that I posted are from a 308 head, and they are stamped with L and R, but you can't see it for the goo...

American vehicles side is always from sitting in the drivers seat position. IE: Left drivers side.. right: pass. side.

UPDATE: The rockers were on the shafts correctly. They were all marked as L and R and matched the pattern pictured above. The reason it looked kind of strange to me is they appear to be a mix and match of different part numbers. None appear to have the same part numbers or like identification marks. They look to be functionally the same with slight cosmetic differences. I guess that's what happens with a parts store rebuild...
