looking to do a cam swap on my 318. it is basically stock with a edelbrock performer intake and an edlbrock 600 cfm 4-barrel. it's in a w100 so i am looking for a little more in the low end. what do you guys suggest? i'm trying to stay budget friendly and also keeping the stock pushrods if possible. thanks

Just reread a mild Dulcich 318 Mopar Muscle build and he mentioned the comp cams XE256 (212/218 @050). I have a mild 318 build coming & I might try that cam.

Ive run a 340 cam in a basically stock 318 and the guy I sold it to really liked, also heard the comp and crane cams that are .454/.454 lift(not sure on the grinds) work real well.

I'm going to run the lunati 60400 in my 360 same aplication as you. That is a 250 advertized duration cam. With the stock low comp and low rpm torque your looking for you should stay below 210@.050 Bullet cams recomended a 195@ .050 cam to me for a 318.

I run a lunati roller cam in my 360 headed 318 and like it for a daily driver

207/213
258/264
.485/.485

comp 901-16 springs

hughes "whiplash" has a chopy chop idle and good street manners

early intake closeing to build cyl pressure in the low comp stock engines to give some good torque and smoothes out 1800 rpms fro good street cruzing

about 160$ for a whiplash, very budget friendly IMHO

Not much over stock. They are not only limited in travel but also pretty weak tension wise. I wouldn't go over 465/470 lift with them at the most and them make sure to check for coil bind. If using 360 heads make sure that you don't have the rotators on the exhaust valves - if so get rid of the short springs and use standard length springs and retainers to match the cam application.

the double t-chain will bolt right in under the cover no problem

they are used in some stock engines stock anyways

I would suggest the comp 901-16 springs

they drop on with no machine work

use stock retainers

use stock seals

and can be swaped with head on the engine with a cam swap

good up to .500 lift

they will work with all the SB lunati cams

and mybe a few others

just compair the spring rate to the cam manufacture recomendations of spring rate for the cam

I'd do a lunati voodoo 60400 and comp #901 springs w/the stock rockers, pushrods, locks, and retainers.

The only stock small blocks that came with a roller chain were the 'Premium' truck engines and the High performance cars. the rest had flat chains and most had the plastic gear gear that likes to strip off at higher mileage. Stock small block valve springs like I said above are pretty wimpy, use springs recommended by the cam company. At least to the recommended rated for the cam. do it right the first time.

cop engines have the roller chain..but I guess that would fall in the performance engine line and premium truck engines

I would think so. But then you never know how the government want to cut corners.

my 88 4-v 360 headed 318 had a double roller chain,roller block/slider cam,windage tray,oil cooler,tranz cooler,ps cooler

the oil cooler return line use a hollow fuel pump bolt to dump oil back to pan and sprayed the roller chain

for longevity I would think

I just swaped in a lunati roller cam and stock valvetrain gear

never had the heads of it yet and is still a little screamer

is getting a little tired though

well over 200,000 on it now

Those teens were one tough engine. Have had and sold alot of them in trucks that pulled hellatious loads.. Had local wholesale grocery company here that ran 6 D500 trucks with 14 foot cube vans for grocery delivery in a 200 mile radious of town here and use 318's. When these truck were traded in the local farmers bought hem and put 14-16 foot grain boxes on them and 300-400 bushel loads of 60lb per bushel wheat to market with them. Many local farmers used them to in pickups to pull 16-18 foot stock trailers down the road with loads of cattle to market. There were vertually bullet proof.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

way better on gas than a 360 also..even when working the snot out of em..

I am a 318 die hard fan myself,it will do what a 360 does,just add more gear

you would be surprized just how much they will buzz at a high rpm too

I held the ol cop motor with the roller cam at 4600 rpms for about 40 miles just last week ridin the interstate...buzzed right along with the glasspacks just a barkin

Shouldn't have to ( i don't). Just take out the 2 pan bolts that go into the cover, loosen cover rome the top and tip outward and either break gasket or cut the pan gasket and when reasembling spice in a new gasket using a small amount of silicone on the splice corner.. Clean and inspect the front pan rail rubber or install a new one.

if the front pan rubber is good leave it,it will make the t-cover go back on easy

if you swap it,use the 2 pan bolts to pull the t-cover down some to line up the other bolts

like said, leave the pan gasket or cut/splice and dab the rtv in the cut/coners and let cure over night

not hard at all, just take you time

once you get the cover off.stuff a rag in the end of the pan to keep stuff from falling in,,,like the woodruff key on the cam when you remove the top gear..DAMHIK

drain the water down out of the rad,you will loose whats in the 2 sides of the block when the lower t-cover bolts are removed

either drain it first or drain oil and then the water

most times you will get a little water in the oil pan..no biggie but change the oil is good practice on a cam swap anyways

get a good oil and a break in additve for the new cam also

I added the new front rail rubber because I usually have one laying around. Or it will come with the pan gasket if you need to get a new one to get ends to spice in. I have just gone to a dealer and gotten one side from a friend and then cut each end off the one side as both ends are the same.
