The shop that did the machine work on my 448 block did a really crappy job chamfering the tops of the cylinder bores. Since I'm going to have to clean up their work, I figured I should notch the tops of the bores for valve-to-cylinder wall clearance, too. What's the best approach to do both of these jobs? Any special tools recommended? The top ring lands are only about .250" down from the piston crown, so there's a limited amount of room to work in. Thanks. - Brad

Do you're head gaskets have an offset for the valves? If they do use it as a guide, otherwise I wouldn't do the reliefs.

Are you sure you need to notch the bores for valve clearnance? As far as chamfering the bores it take a special tool on the boring bar or a conical tapered stone that can be used on a drill motor, they work, there crude also.

Using a steel shim I clearenced/relieved the head chamber at its tightest spot at the valves.
I then marked the gasket at its relieve points and transfered that same clearence to the block using it as a Template for chamfering.

To save Compression I didnt chamfer the exhaust as much, as I feel the intake side is the most benificial. I used a medium bit carbide grinder.

The results before and after with the Intake valve set at .550 lift was very appearant as viewed from the bottom side of the clyinder. mike

EDIT, Also it wasnt done for clearence. It was done for a smoother more open intake flow near its highest velocity flow path. At minumum, I think all the BB engines could see a improvement by at least breaking the Sharp bore edges at those points.

I prefer the shop not chamfer the top.
As far as unshrouding the block, blue up the deck surface and then put the heads on the bare block. Reach up through each cylinder and mark the deck where the chamber wall lies around the outside of each valve. Off with the heads and out with the die grinder. You can make a ref mark in the cylinder to stay above if need be, but .250 down is a mile. Good Luck

Maybe a carbide bit or a 38 grit sanding roll. The sanding roll works better for me but some guys are skilled with the carbide bit.

getting ready to do my smallblock the very same way as you explained.

I used the head gasket as a template after I checked it against the head. Blued and scribed. Carbide burr and sanding rolls. I did it before the final machining.

My stuff looks just like BSB67's stuff.

Don't be scared, fire up the carbide

I would make sure I knew where the top ring travel ends before I started (and I do on motors that need chamfering) chamfering the cylinder walls, no sense in going to deep and hanging a ring up and breaking it or allowing all of the compression to blow by the top ring Measure three times, cut once

I just go half way to the top ring and scribe a line.No big deal

Thanks for all the replies. I'm interested in doing it for airflow reasons, too.
