Larry Larson has won Hot Rod magazines Drag Week 2 years in a row with his incredible Nova. The thing runs high 6's at 200 mph and cruises all over town and drives cross country with no problem. He doesen't change tires or drop the mufflers at the track, or pull a trailer either.

http://www.bangshift.com/blog/Video-Larry-Larson-s-204-MPH-Pass-at-Drag-Week-2009.html

http://www.bangshift.com/blog/Video-and-...egas-Strip.html

So what would it take to beat this guy on Drag Week with a Hemi powered B or E-body?
What chassis would you use, what would the engine build be? What tires? Who would be the best builder for the car and the most capable driver?
He runs in the unlimited class, so tube a chassis, any blower or turbo or nitrous is OK, any tire, any trans. Larry runs a lenco trans.

Remember, it has to make the 1000+ mile drive from track to track over the course of a week, as well as go 6's. Could it be done?

A dump truck load of cash similar to the size of the stimuless bill probably.

6 seconds at 200+ mph and driving all over the country while doing it.

crazy.....

A real race car chassis, lots of cubes and 2 big turbos.

Thought about that a lot. Hemi is cooler, but I think it might be easier/cheaper to do it with a turbo stroker wedge for cost, packaging, and valvetrain reasons.

Talking to the competitors and watching the racing in person on 3 occasions it seems to me two biggest problems that plague the faster cars are transmissions and valvetrain failure. The Lenco seems to hold up far better than all the rest, ever the built TH400s with the GV OD. I don't think anyone has ever lunched a GV OD unit, so those are great parts, but broken transmissions, rockers, and broken lifters seem to be the order of the day for the DNFs - assuming all the rest stays together.

Kurt Urban ran a 'glide in his Nova a few years back that I think worked well for him, but I would want more gear for the street so you could maybe use a little less convertor.

EFI and turbos seems to be the combo for all the fastest cars, but maybe you could do it with a blow through carb if you had a track and street carb and plugs to change out.

Chassis wise I have no idea what to go with other than obviously full tube, and I have not beat him yet nor run the event - yet, so my advice is of course worth what you paid for it.

Hopefully economics get a little better for me and I get to someday before I get to the grave.

Is a Lenco really "streetable"? That's a lot of pulling levers just to pick up some groceries!

He's using a nova, why use a B or E body? keep it lighter with an A body, valiant, duster, demon ect.. that would be a good start.

My opinion would be tube chassis... most likely a wedge
but maybe a hemi (but hemis are big and weigh)...
it would need turbos, plus I would use EFI... it needs
a OD trans for the road... anything to keep the revs
down on the road... being a turbo you can get away with
less cam and lighter springs... you have to keep the
revs down so more boost... JMO
I seen him run this past season.... he has more in it
and I expect he will show more next year

I agree with Bob. Tube chassis, big turbos, Lenco... Basically a dump truck load of money.

There is a reason why he has been as successful as he has after all. Its not cheap to go 6's at over 200.

I agree A body or even an F body you have to stay small for aero and weight reasons. The bigger the car (B body) the more pipe you have and pipe = weight. Also a pick up bed full of dead presidents.

I think nothing running that power level is bulletproof if you miss the tune-up a little.

I think turbos are best because they can leave a little softer and bring in more power at the big end. Less shock on the drivetrain. Sixes are still sixes, but less shock on the drivetrain with 1000 mile trip seems like a good thing.

Centrifugal SCs might be similar, but you lose a lot (too much?) driving the compressor.

NOS would be cheaper, but those cars all seem to just destroy parts off the line. That yellow S10 left like it shot out of a cannon, but broke 1 or 2 passes later - DNF.

Larson kinda has the holy grail - he built his and Moran's Chassis, and his engine had Moran's valve covers on it, so I am sure Moran was involved. That would/will be a pretty tough team to beat. Those guys campaign the two fastest most successful turbo cars on the planet (in their respective classes), and have years of experience (and a lot of failures to prove it) getting there. I have a ton of respect for those guys.

As far as Larson having more in it, I think that is 100% true. I talked to some guys in the turbo business recently who seemed to know his car, and Larson's chargers are AT LEAST 15-20% bigger than he needed to do what he did so far.

you would need more spring pressure so you dont blow the valves open. if you have a great cooling system for the engine and trans, that would save alot of parts. larson didnt win his first 2 years so i think it would take a learning curve even if you have the money to try it

Moran spent i believe 3 days in Larsons car in 08 tuning on it. i think larson put that car together in a week before drag week 08

Larson's car is pretty amazing.

At the last SCSN in Vegas, he was driving it on the strip (Las Vegas Blvd.) at night.

Hats off to him.

sure it is, this challenger wish i have never seen at ha track uses one, but since i have never seen it at the track i cant realy tell about how fast it is but i would estimate it being able to run deep into the 7s but sixes are way faster

i have personaly seen this cuda run a sub 7.5time with a biiiiig bigblock on nitrous i gues it would be faster with a turboengine but you sure can make a "street" e body run fast

none of these pics are mine but they are very fast E-Bodys that are totaly streetable aslong as the law looks the other way

probably an A-body and a bunch of $$$$$$$. I mean that's what it comes down to. Buy an old PS car hang a dart shell on it and go.

im very impressed with larsons car for sure, its unbelivably fast for a streetcar, i bet it takes a truckload of money to build it and learn all the leasons that needs to be learnt but i can also see that it takes an enormous amount of tallent to get it all working right

i think it could be done with an A Body or an E Body but a B Body i think would bee pushing it those are alitle to large in my opinion not trying to take anything away from those that have real fast B Bodys i know there is a few on this site and even C Bodys but they realy are alitle on the big side

not trying to argue and i know alot of real fast "street"cars are rebodied old prostocks but are those chasies realy set up for all that torque? i mean they are higly refined and specialised racecars and they dont realy make that stupid amount of torque that a boosted engine makes? just a thought i have had in my mind for a very loong time but never realy asked the Question

Hemi Joel. My opinion would be a twin turbo small block 60's Barracuda.Either that or a TT Brad Anderson. It would be cool to purpose build a bullet to compete.
