I have a 440 that i can't figure out what cam is in it. It's a purple cam and here are the numbers on it.

111830
261001
260831 (I am not 1000% sure of the last 3 on this one because there is USA stamped in the same spot.

Thanks

Anthony

I'm not sure about the numbers, possably the cam core numbers?
Best thing to do with an unknown cam is degree it at several lobe lift points like 0.004", 0.006", 0.008" (common advertised duration lobe lift numbers), and at 0.050" and 0.200". Then measure peak lobe lift and multiply by 1.5 to get standard valve lift rating. repeat the same thing on the exhaust any you can calculate overlap and lobe seperation angle.

Measure it, and you'll never go wrong.

Until recently, Mopar's Michigan-based cam grinder was not required to mark cams with numbers identifiable to anyone but themselves.

Mopar's requirements were, until recently, a series of cryptic paint codes on the cam which over time have been proven to be inaccurate....with many cams, the paint code is "none", and with no reliable identifying marks....you gotta measure.

The 6 digit stamping is a job number internal to the cam grinder, which does not directly correspond to any of Mopar's numbers. To decode one to find out what grind it is generally requires a long complicated 3 way conversation and by the time it's done, you could have measured it....

The end to all this is near.

When Mopar's existing stock is sold, the next batch of cams will be marked with a "P" part number that is almost identifiable by the general public. I say "almost" because the cam component number is never the same as the cam/lifter kit number. They are usually off by one digit or sometimes very different.

Maybe the mfg should just stamp them with a code such as 528, 590, 620, etc. I think we all would know what that ment.

That is what I figured. I am going to try and measure it and probably run it on Cam Pro, which I wanted to check it against.

No need to run it on a cam pro. You already know its a purple MP cam. Just measure the Base circle diameter compared to the Whole lobe and circle dimeter height.

Subtract the difference and thats your lobe lift. Multiply that by 1.5 to get a approximate valve lift. You will know witch cam you have.

If your math shows around a .483 lift, you know you have the .484 MP cam If it shows .591 lift, you know you have the MP 590 cam. ETC,ETC

There will be a dot or slash of paint on the cam. Post where on the cam the dot or slash is, what color it is and whether it's big or smallblock and I can tell you what it is hopefully.

As Zippy said it's a crappy system and I tried for years while working with MP to get it changed, but it wasn't a big enough deal for anyone to care. That being said, we could normally figure out the cams with the color codes.
