ill be going base/clear in the spring. I was recommended to stay away from single stage because it is harder to fix if you get a run.

Base/Clear would be much easier and safer for a beginner. Be sure to follow the Tech (P) Sheets for your products and the base will spray pretty easy once the gun is adjusted properly. If you get runs, bugs, dirt or bang into the car you can fix those areas and respray the base. Once you are satisfied with it you can spray your clear. There is a difference in how you spray metallic paints and solid colors so you need to read up on your particular paint choice. Try browsing this link: http://autobody101.com/forums/index.php as there is lots of painting information there.

I've talked to some shops around here about just painting the car, but they won't because they didn't do the body work
I can understand a "SHOP" not wanting to take a chance, but there should be a painter or painter/bodyman(professional) that's looking for some side work and extra $$ - talk around with the local car clubs (all) surely someone will know a professional that can help you out.

if it's black, I'd recommend going with urethane single stage, it's very tough ,scratch and chip resistant versus base/clear. To me, spraying single stage is much easier and alot less time consuming, 1 hour in paint booth versus 3 hours, costs about half of base/clear and alot more durable. Look into Matrix paint line, it's best bang for the buck, been using it for long time,it's great stuff.

I generally prefer Dupont Chroma Premier BC/CC over single stage anything,....esp black, prep, mat'l and blocking, lots of it are key to a nice paint job, I know you want to be on a budget, we all do, paint and supplies are $$$$$, driver or not, do it once, do it right, or you'll spend more correcting it, or living with it, the choices are yours, This is a customers car done in Dupont Chroma Premier, wetsanded to 3000 grit, buffed, still needs to be polished, ...Black needs to be mirror straight, EVERYTHING/ANYTHING shows Mike
