Are the 68 GTX trunk panel mouldings painted red in the relieved sections all the way accross the panel?
My parts car was a Satellite, and the panel has only got red in the very outside areas near the tailamps.
Also, is this any special "shade" of red???
No one in this neck of the woods has an original to look at, and trying to go by memory is tough for an old fart like me!
Sometimes makes me wonder if I should have ever embarked on this venture of saving this car.

Yes the trunk panel had the red on a GTX. It's not paint , but a reflective stripe.

Funny this came up as I just ordered the reflective tape for the rear panel on my gtx. It is actually a maroon color and is supposed to mimic the taillight lense color and appear to continue across the panel. I will be installing my new decals tomorrow but here is a pic of my panel prior to the removal of the old reflective stripes.

That panel looks mint on your car. Mine's still got all the studs, but the chroming is not super good,(42 years old!) but definitely good driver condition. I'm just going to do the textured argent and the silver areas and I guess apply the tape.
Who'd you order the tape from if you don't mind me asking?

Can only wish it was mine! That's a pic I saved from a ebay auction, I think, a while back.

While we're on the tailpanel subject here, there was a post not long ago regarding a source for the special cupped washers that are used with the speed nuts to hold the panel on to the trunk lid.
Anyone remember who that supplier was? Or was it an Ebay thing?

This is what I believe is correct also and for the '68 road runner decor finish panel too that is painted maroon. I have my '68 rr tfp being restored now and I HOPE THE PAINT IS DARK MAROON TO MATCH THE TAIL LIGHT LENS, (Mark ) I've seen too many that were redone in a bright red or at best light maroon and IMO it should match the dark red/maroon of the tail lights. The darker the better.

I remember that car. I think it got to a high bid of around 25k and didn't make the reserve.

Mike, I found a very close off the shelf maroon/red for the RR's. I matched it to my org. panel, my org had a ding and I found a very nice Satellite panel I painted to RR pattern.

Since I'm restoring a '68 Sport Satellite I have wondered about this. My tailpanel has the center reflective tape put all the factory photos I've seen don't have them. Anyone know what is correct?

No longer taking $h!t from anyone!

Sport Sat has the reflective inserts only on the outer slots adjancent to tail lamps. Not in the center slots.. There are a few companies makeing them. Just make sure there on 3M stock.

My 68 GTX (built @St. Louis plant in late May)at first appeared to have the darker maroon color to the tape, until I looked at the ends where it wraps around the casting. Here, the color was much more red. I believe that the sun/age darkened the tape over time. Although I agree that the original intent may have been to have a seamless look from tailight lens to tailight lens, the color of the protected portion of the tape (at least on mine) tells the real story. It may have been that the supplier (probably 3M) didn't quite match the color of the lens. Found some red tape at the local jobber, and put it on, even though it is not a good color match to my lenses. This is one of those cases where I had to let the car speak to me, rather than the other way around.
