Are there any tell tale signs if a car has an original paint job? Such as things done at the factory that would indicate a car has never been repainted?

I've got a 72 Dodge Demon with what I'm guessing is the original paint job. Its only got 17k miles on it but it just looks too good to be true.

The only thing that I've heard is with the fender tag, with one screw being unpainted. The tag would be screwed in on side only, painted over, and then it would be lifted up to paint the underside and then the second (unpainted screw would be installed. Is that true or just a myth?

From what Ive found the left screw was put in and the cars went into the dip tank for primer, then the 2nd screw was then put in to paint. So the tag and under it got primer. If you can find a guy with a durometer(it measures the thickness in miles)you can get a better idea if its orginial...

Check the door jambs, trunk gutter, inside lip of the front fenders closely for over-spray or tape lines. Also look at the trim closely for paint. If there are any stone chips or scratches to see if there is a layer of paint.

fender tag

It looks like the screws were switched left to right at one point. The right screw looks to have paint on it and would have been on the left where the tag was bent up for painting. Is there a small area of no paint under the left side of the tag where the crease is on the inner fender?

I took some pictures so you can take a look. This first picture is with the tag removed and placed above where it normally is screwed down. You can see on the left its more rusty compared to the right side

And then I since were on the subject of fender tags, this was screwed down underneath the left screw of the fender tag. Any idea what this is?

Yep definitely have the factory 'defects' such as runs and even orange peel in some spots

Correct me if I'm wrong but the original paint is visible where the fender tag has been removed.. It's a completely different color much more olive than the area that was repainted...

Mostly original paint '70 'Cuda (the engine compartment was painted black back in the '70's)- lots of orange peel, anywhere the paint is buffed too thin or where chips/dings/dents are, you can see the primer layers.

Randy, I noticed that also and that too. Then I wondere if that area didn't get sprayed that much. I'm not an expert on this stuff so I have been watching this thread closely hoping to learn a thing or two. I know about the 1 painted screw and turned up fender tag while painting but it does seem the screws have been transposed based on the bend in the tag.

If you know someone who has a lift get the car up in the air and you can tell a re-paint very easy.

I never had a chance to view these cars when they were new but always heard my dad tell stories how you would have to wax your new mopar about 10 times as soon as you got it home in order to fill the peel and get a reasonable shine.

Since then I have looked at quite a few original paint cars and I am still amazed at how bad they were!!!
