When it's stated that you should have say .004 piston to wall clearence do they mean .002 on each side of the piston or do they mean .004 on each side?

Total piston to wall clearances recommended by the piston maker All minimum clearances are between the parts, valve to piston and so on

The way I describe it, the piston to wall clearance is the difference between the cylinder bore diameter and the piston diameter. The location on the piston skirt to measure the piston dia is specified by the piston manufacturer.

The bore should be larger than the piston diameter.A piston with a diameter of 4.370 and recommended .005 clearence should be used in a block with the bore at 4.375.Piston manufactures recommend the clearence and where to measure at on the piston skirt.

that always worked for me. bore smaller than piston- bad.

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?
