Picked up a 68 HP block cast in late 67. I noticed the normal production number on the pan rail.....PT440..... Upon further inspection I found what appears to be a vin number on the block near the bell housing area.I have two other 68 blocks that dont have this. Is this normal? I will post pictures later.

68 are hit or miss, some were stamped some werent, on the bell housing flange drivers side usually. Ive also seen 68s that have the trannys stamped and the blocks not stamped...guess it was the line guys felt like doing that day!

1968 440 HP What info is on the top pad?
PT - Trenton engine plant 440 - ?? S - "special" 2285 - October 30, 1967 machine date 2428 - unit number
Engine is from XS29L8B186498, built first week of November 1967 in Hamtramck, MI.
I assume chargers were only B body built at Hamtramak in 68 ?

dont those block vin numbers look like the same font as the body stamp numbers?????
The engine VIN would be stamped at the final essembly plant so I'm not surprised by it .

The "B" in the partial VIN identifies the Hamtramck (Dodge Main) assembly plant.....with 440 power, Hamtrack built Coronets and Chargers in '68.
PT440S24812718
PT= Plant Trenton 440= Displacement S= Special Engine 2481= Build date May 13, 1968 2718= Sequence number, the 2718th built that day.

John, Coronets were assembled at Lynch Road, Stl and LA in 68. The engine must be from a Chrger R/T.
